Hi: Longtime RL'er from the 993 Forums getting the itch for a 914 project. I can do almost everything except body and paint work. I found a nice '73 1.7L that is pretty attractive, the right color for me, and has great interior and good running mechanicals. BUT, as the seller states: "typical rust" These are the only photos of the damage but I can assume from these that the battery box is also a mess. I wouldn't mind a full resto, or keep driving as is IF the price is right, but could use some 914 expert advice on whether this one looks too far gone for any good ROI. Thanks in advance.
Take the roof off and look at the door seam right at the top rear corner. If it's not the same width all the way down or if the door binds up at the top when you go to open it and swing it out, find a different one.
With the roof off, door gaps should look like this
The top should not be touching. If it is, the whole chassis is weak and compromised.
The car is a bit too far from me to go take a look unless I get convinced it could work out, but based on the photo below I don't think it will pass the door jam test. And this is with the roof in place! I love the color but it will likely take so much work - plus a full respray - that I think I'll stay in search mode.

Yea, those door gaps look collapsed. I'd keep looking.
