Default Down the 912 slippery slope

Well - it's done... A few months ago, a friend asked me if I would be interested in a '67 912.. He said it needed work, as he's owned it since 1972 - and it's been sitting in his garage since it was last driven in 1975. The gentleman is a wonderful person - and I've known him for years, but never knew about his 912. At the same time - he's aware that Porsche is a little addiction of mine...

Anyway - the phone rings a few days ago - and he asks if I wanted to see his 912 to see if I'd be interested in this project? Sure!!!

So - anyway - I go about an hour across the state, and meet up with him.. And see the 912...

It's a bit of a project - but only has 57,000 original miles.. And portions are original paint. Never a major accident - BUT - it's rusting badly in mostly cosmetic areas. The torsion bar tubes, longitudinals 95% of the floor pan seem to be intact and strong... The rockers (inner & outer), front portion of the trunk - and the interior bits are a mess, however...

Sooooo - I thought I'd start this thread and see where this 912 takes me. Tonight, it sits in my garage alongside my other P'cars - all of them cheering on this little forlorn 912....

I'll update this thread as things progress...

The previous owner looking on as it's on its way to its new home...

Home....

Interior & exterior - OH MY GOSH!!!

The engine - or what there is..??

FOUND! A can of unopened Rustoleum in the front trunk... Opportunity missed

My Best always,

John D.

Thanks Sean..!

Honestly - I'm a bit overwhelmed by the potential "to do" list - but, the price was "right" at exactly "$0" spent (well, so far...?! ) HA!

Best to you!

Yeah John!

Great year, GREAT candidate. Look at those 4.5 inch Fuchs! Those are SUPER rare and worth a MINT! My cars previous owner sold the 4.5's for more than he paid for the car. I wish I had them back.

Such a great little car the 912. Good color too. You will luv this 912. I can assure you.

I'm new to the forum and the world of Porsche. It makes me smile to see a car that is dentin to be saved vs waste away in a dark corner.

My thanks Great_Escape.!

As well - I spent a few hours tearing apart the interior today to get down to the floorboards from the inside, rather than underneath the car to see what's left...

In short....

Two families of mice were transported with the car. I kid you not... And they were bound and determined to "stay during the renovations". I had different plans...

As well - the rear of the tunnel and rear floor pan along the tunnel seam is toast. So - I'll probably cut out the entire back half of the floorpan and install a new one - or at least the rear right quarter, but, I'm thinking the entire rear half right now...

The right inner and outer rockers are toast (I have yet to get to the left) - so those will be cut out and replaced - and while I'm in there, probably the heater duct as I'll have full access...

Pics follow:

My best always - and thanks for looking!

I had a few hours to work on the car earlier today - and gutted the interior and removed the rear window/trim, etc.

It's an interesting project for sure... I just wish I could find a single screw or bolt that wasn't "welded" with rust.....

These are from today:

The initial cleaning is always the worst, get it to were its stabilized then focus on small areas and work those. Put together a plan and always focus on how great it will be its done.

Looking at the photos it really looks like its all there. Often times so many projects start with way too many missing pieces. It may not seem so now ~ but this one should go well.

Bringing any vintage car back into shape is admirable, but doing so with a vintage Porsche is also very rewarding. Especially for people like us with an affinity for such things. More photos please.

My thanks..!

And yes - it's been a long few days - and I'll post updated pics in a bit, but for right now - nothing much to show unless you want to see a really bad interior tub getting stripped down to bare metal

The pictures will probably be more exciting when I'm cutting out the cancer and welding in new portions...

Anyway - my thanks!

I predict this will be the most expensive free Porsche you will ever own, JD.
