thoughts on this 912 found on thesamba?
Ive been eager to get into a Porsche and I have a secret crush on the 912. Light, nimble, simple. all things I think are part of the 912 and things I love about the cars I build. I come from the early watercooled VW background but have been into E30s for the last few cars. This has always seemed to be the next step in my "growth" as a German Car lover. Im not too intimidated by wrenching on things, but have little experience with carbs. Always wanted to learn, but didnt own my Carb'd 76 Scirocco long enough to mess with it. Anyways, enough about me....
Just curious what the experts think of the car?

That motor ---- ???
Gene Berg vw engine with Porsche cooling fan and fiberglass shroud. Dual carbs and oil cooler.
That's the FRANKENPORSCHE part of the car I couldn't quite "get".

Just go back and look at picture # 8, I rest my case

I completely understand the issue with it not being so original, but as this would be my first Porsche I think the buy-in price is good and its not too far gone to bring some respect back to it. I love/hate the doorpanels and that would be one of the first things I would go replace. I like how they mimic the RS style, but they look too cheap/ homemade. Saw these in another thread and they are exactly what I would get.

I am not a purist, so the fact that it has a VW motor doesnt bother me much, but the longterm goal would be to build a proper Porsche motor for it. Besides, a lot of the flat 4 motors in Porsches were VW motors, right? ('65 912, 914, 912E)

someone else thought it was a good deal and swooped on it. Now its for sale for nearly double...

the worst part is that its now a short drive away instead of a few states. still tempted

Yea I wouldnt consider it without taking thousands off the price. Like I said originally, the mods dont bother me as I would be hard pressed to NOT modify one, especially a 912.
Anyone know what this actually tells us?
VIN# 455060
He calls it Ossi Blue, but that definitely doesnt look Ossi Blue, and it wasnt a color offered in 66...

The guy in Costa Mesa seems very legit, and someone who is trying to take advantage of the Porsche market right now.
I think we can all agree that this isnt a deal at 20k+ but at around the original selling price (13.5k) it wsa a good deal for what it was. I think the deal breaker for this car is whether it is the original Porsche motor that was built or just some 1600cc VW motor that got built up.
My personal plan for this car was (and would still be if I get it) to build a 2276 Raby motor. Its not an original car, and I like that. I cant keep well enough alone.
