Default Looked at a '66 912 today

Found on my local craigslist. No sunroof, 94K on the clock, early recaros, so-so repaint, very little rust, 3 gauge dash? asking $7900. where can I find a specification list for an early car like this? I'm curious about the 3 gauge dash and lack of sunroof. 'Started right up but I didn't get to drive it - no insurance. 'Not sure if it has 4 or 5 speeds. Fuchs look wider than I'd expect for a '66, tires were 165mm - what came stock? Any thoughts?

I'm always curious on mileage its a 43 year old car, maybe 194K, 294K??? Rust is always the enemy, however you reported little. I would get a PPI, and check to see if any record history of what's been done.....5 speed is a plus, otherwise not sure how many came w/or without sunroofs. I prefer with. Not sure on the Fuchs.....

Good Luck.....

pics or link to the ad?? Most came with 5spds and no snrfs. 3 gauges were the earliest versions unique to the 912 and should have the 912 'script' slanted on the glove box and lower right corner of the rear lid. 165 tires were stock but fuchs were not. if you're very lucky they are the 4.5" 'S' fuchs made of unobtainium otherwise they are 5.5x14" or 6x15" neither of which would look correct with 165s.

Tell him no test drive no deal, you need to put at least a few miles on it. Most need throttle, shift linkage and clutch cable adjustments. All are easy but critical for acheiving fahrvergnugen. Also pay close attention to suspension bushings frt and rr and brakes. If no rust, your ahead of the game.

The first and second one look like excellent fairly original cars. A great place to start if you want a car you can drive and refurb as you go. Again body work is your biggest enemy, next if it runs and drives then the rest is easy. These cars are simple and reliable. Paint and metal work will have you off the road and spending big bucks. So, if you can drive it and live with whatever the paint/rust condition is, go for it. The prices are very reasonable.

A couple things I noticed on the red one:
The rear bumper guard is from a 68'
The rear '912' angled script is missing from the lower right corner of the rear lid. Same should be on the glove box door.
and both frt horn grilles as well as the rear engine grill are black which is incorrect. They should be chrome. If you're lucky they are just later black plastic ones otherwise they have painted over the chrome which would be a crime!!
The fuchs look like 5.5x14" versions. I use the same for my track tires, fairly rare and unique to the 'comfort group' 911 Es begining in 1969.

With the changes to the rear lid I mentioned I would look closely for evidence of a rear end hit....

The green one, looks to be the most original of the bunch. Original wheels and the lights on each quarter panel are correct for 1968. 99% of 68's are missing these because most people didn't like them or accident repair eliminated them. I can't tell if it's a long or short wheel base because 68's had both being the transition year. easy to tell just look at torsion bar cover relative to the rear wheel arch. If it's right next to it it's a SWB if there is an inch or two between them it's a LWB. SWB / LWB they are both attractive, it's up to you which you prefer. I've had and love both.

The blue one has fake fuchs and a type IV engine looks like a bit of a problem child but could have potential if you don't care about originality but re-sale will suffer. Unless, you can buy it right, after all HIS re-sale will suffer too.....

I'm newly interested in 912's - I like the (seeming) simplicity. I've owned several 911's, the 928 S4 in this link is my current DD http://www.928registry.org/1991-928S4-0381.htm
What is the attraction of the soft window Targa - rarity, impracticality, difficulty in seeing when one backs up? Thanks for the all education, I'm enjoying it!

LOL! I would have say it's the rarity. Unique to the early cars, the soft window really gave a open top driving feel. Having owned both cab and targa..... The cab is great but you get a lot of wind blast from behind. The targa gives you the open air feeling with the wind protection from the rear glass/plastic. I personally am a bigger fan of the early (silver hoop) targas. Not so much the SC/Carrera versions..... They are higher maintenance and leaky both water and rain. There's no accounting for taste.... your call....

Great points Butzip....did you end up getting the car? It's funny cuz older cars, depending on their condition, either have added value or are devalued like crazy. Yours looks like it definitely has a lot of value in it.
