Default 1965 912 value

im Looking at a 65 912 that a friend has.
original red paint no major body damage or rust
the car has been stored for the last 20 or 25 years
it has a 5 speed trans and 5 1/2" fuchs on it

the downside is no motor. it was taken out 20 or so years ago for a rebuild and never made it back in the car.

any idea what it might be worth?

I don't know what a 65 would get over a 67-69, so forgive my ignorance on that.. But, I'd say $5-6k for a solid chassis at the high end. Its not like you can get these engines anywhere (if you want to be authentic). Then again, if it has original 65 fuchs you might have $2k of wheels there!

My opinion - buy it for $4-5k, put a renegade VW engine in and drive it!

nah, you would be suprised Mike. There are alot of factors that depends with a 65. mainly the serial number, how early of a car is it? also, does it have a painted dash or not? also it depends on how complete it is, does it have full tool kit, sales papers, owners manual, etc..

plus it depends on the condition its in too. really, we need pics and full details. your best bet is to visit www.912bbs.org, the 912 registry's forums, and let the experts on 65 cars answer your questions.

Original paint, no previous damage or rust = Priceless!! 5spd = A+ 5.5in fuchs are 14" diameter...... from comfort package 911E era circa 1969ish (I have 2 sets) they are fetching bigger and bigger dollars.

I agree with Harry if it's complete enough to be 'significant', then it deserves a proper restoration = big$$$

However, the fact that the original engine is gone it will never be 100% orginal sooooo............

Bottomline - Original paint, no previous damage or rust these are your biggest obstacles with these cars. You can pick up 912 engine on E-bay for $1500 - $3500 plan on a $6-8k rebuild more if you have it done. I would be inclined to call CB performnce and buy a nice new 2165cc stroker for $5k, replace all suspension bushings, tie rods, ball joints, shocks, struts, brakes and enjoy it.

Fair price (without seeing any pics etc...) $4-6K

The 5.5" fuchs are 15"
i found out the guy has some of the motor parts. the crank is reground, the heads are rebuilt the cooling tins. he is looking to see what else he has.

i dont need to call CB performance, i build hot vw engines for a living
but i do get alot of parts from CB

The motor casting 3rd piece is the key. It has the S# stamped on it. You can build a motor around it and still have a maching numbers car.

Hopefully its really got a 5 speed trans and not just a 5 speed **** on a 4 speed shifter... Check that out before giving him an offer... Ive heard stories about 912's having 5 speed ***** and its unfortunate for the new buyer

Mike- Those 5.5x15 Fuchs are a '68-only wheel. Lot's of '68 owners are on the prowl for those.
