Butzi P, I love that last shot of your car at speed. It should be submitted for use on the Rennlist homepage!

Thanks Alan!! maybe I'll do that once I figure out how to submit it :-)

Harry, My Dad bought it in 1968. A serviceman bought it in Germany, brought it to the states broke the half-shafts and sold it to my dad. I got my hands on it when I was 15. The car was sitting for 3 years on it's 2nd blown engine, rotted and covered with patio furniture in our garage. I was chompin' at the bit to get my license and a gear head from day one and I guess the rest is history. I have been really successful auto-crossing the car since 1996 and DE since 2000. This car, although under powered has always been more fun than my 944 Turbo S, 911SC and carrera. It's light, nimble a bit of a giant killer I love it!!

Harry, I love the mini-lites and btw - that doesn't look like Ohio!!

such a great story!! you can never win the HP race, so there is no sense trying. but you can try to make it competitive, which a 912 certainly can be. and the best thing to do is to have a lighter car.. light weight beats hp most of the time. so the light weight, the nimbleness, ease to work on, and ease which one can upgrade performance parts to more stout 911 parts (ie big brakes, suspension etc) make it easy to compete. even a bone stock car can compete fairly well.

lol, yeah that wasnt Ohio, that is central coast california, off of the Bixby creek bridge (pacific coast highway) this summer.

how much stuff can you fit in a 912? a lot... and it was my and my girlfriend, and we fit all of this, plus, we had more stuff in the trunk you cant see. lots of spare parts. my friends locally call me 2 cars, cause i have a spare car in the trunk . not really, just spare carbs, spare ignition system (distributor, rotor, cap, points, condensor, plugs,) spare fuel pump, fuel filters, oil filters, case of oil, a few towels and rags, brake parts cleaner, a tool kit fitted for the appocalypse, spare exhaust gaskets, spare axle and cv joints, electrical wire, fuses, valve cover gaskets, spare pully and hub, a few fan belts, fuel hose, and some other stuff. also in the trunk were 2 compact camping chairs.

we also had with us, in the car as you can see, a case of wine to bring back, 1 bag of clothes for me, one bag of clothes for her, a bag full of car cleaning stuff (to wash the bugs and detail fritz for teh 912 rendezvous), a cooler full of water and stuff, a pair of the ugliest racing shoes you could ever find that i won at the show (ill put em to use when i start auto-xing), and a few other things. And we had two people in the car who drove to california like this and back (minus the case of wine). Needless to say, this 12 was stuffed!!

OK, finally some pics of the exhaust. Nothing spectacular but the Magnaflow muffler is a straight through design, zero restriction and it actually muffles. nice throaty sound especialy @ idle.

Interesting oil system. I bet you could s lip a zip lock bag over the filter after breaking it loose and spin the filter right into the bag. Remove when the dripping stops. No mess.

now thats a sexy straight pipe.. is it bursch headers or a bursch copy? i cant see with the tape on it if its 4-2-1 or 4-1. Where did you get the set up? did you have to modify the magnaflow and do some weldinng, bending etc to get it to fit? did you do it or did a muffler shop do it? Im guessing there is no restriction or back preassure -does that weaken performance? i hear from sources on the bbs that it does.. what is your take?

good point kurt, never thought of that!

Actually, I bought the header and Magnaflow muffler off e-bay. The header came with an Empi 356 muffler which found it's way back on e-bay. The Magna flow is polished stainless offset (like the bursch) both the in and out pipes are courtesy of a Hooker headers J-pipe and flange from a local hot rod shop. All had to be cut and welded for the application. I did this at my buddies shop. The mega-phone is standard VW buggy issue, again, cut and welded to fit. Open it sounds like a 4 cammer killer sound @ idle hollow barking but not many people appreciate the open pipes :-(

It's 4 into 1 and I definately do not notice a decrease in performance.
