'74-? 912E
Okay, YOU guys won't fail me.
Saw a CLEAN 912E yesterday. Chrome Fuchs, sport seats, sunroof. Looked a lot like Mexico blue. The car had the impact bumpers, so it was at least a '74. I guess I didn't know the little 4 was made that late. What's the dealio?

dude, that has to be brian southwell's!!! great car!
if you wanna talk to brian about the car or learn more about the 912E, he owns a restraunt in Houston called 'southwell's'. very nice guy and very enthusiastic about his cars. he has a 68 912, and a 76 912E. Tell him Harry said hello if you stop by.
the 912 stopped after 69. then they made the 914 as the low end model from 70-75. the 912E is a car they made after the 914.. a one year only car as a stop gap between the 914 (which they stopped making), and the 924 (which wasnt ready). they had 2000 914 engines left and no chaiss to put them in so they made the 912E (in 76). took 911s bodies and 914 2.0 engines.. vola.. 912E.

See, I SHOULD have worded my post, "I know HARRY won't let me down..."
I suspected there was something unique about a 912 with impact bumpers, and there's no surprise that you knew, Harry. I've eaten at Southwell's a few times in the med center; there's also one by my apartment. I'll be sure to ask for Brian next time. AWESOME clean car, man. Have a good New Year's, dude...

Yup - definitely Brian's 'E' - nice color eh? The car's in GREAT shape - mind you, Brian's '68 is in even better condition... His 996 C4S is not too bad as well hehe
We had a meet this weekend (the texas912.org folks) and Brian, Norv and Jerry were there with the 912E's... We must have a monolpoly of them out here in Texas!! Great cars with galvanized bodies and the Type 4 engine which will cruise all day at 85 no problem.

i had the pleasure of meeting Brian and seeing his 68 in monterey -awsome car! i would love to see his E though. Norv's E is spotless too. i didnt get a chance to see Jerry's car, but all 3 of them are the nicest characters you could ever meet. i cant wait to meet them again one of these days.

they were only made the latter part of 76-my car is a 76 914. In 77 they introduced the 924.
914 till aug 76- 912e till april 77 -when the 924 was first imported to US

actually there are quite a few hundred built in 75 (76 model year though). infact number 735 was built in november of 75. (so at approx 800 of the 2099 made were built in the last 4 or 5 mos of 1975!)
you can tell what month a 912E was made because it should have the build month/year on the door seal on some kind of plate. early cars (til 73 at least) did not have that plate.
912E 2081 was built in June of 1976.

im curious...
ive heard conflicting info on this. here in cali, your vehicle is smog exempt if it is a 75 or older. if your 76 model was built in 75 could you be exepmt? ive heard both yes and no...and ive heard people who say they know personally argue both halfs....anyone wanna clearify?

the 912E is not exempt at all afaik. (alot of people are pissed too.. 1 year away from exemption!).
best bet is to ask the experts on the 912E board of the 912bbs. they would know the laws better (dont own an E and im not a californian)
