Default considering purchase 1989 930 Coupe-advice on PP

Grey/Linen absolutely flawless in every regard, 59,000 miles, all service records from new, incredible pristine condition, needs nothing and would pass for a 20,000 mile example -original paint as verified with paint meter. Considering purchase at 160,000, thoughts on PP? I looked at Hagerty's on line valuation and I think its out of whack-much too high.

IMO, it is over priced. Look on ebay. You can find better deals.

really? on eBay? ... personally I would never buy a car like this over eBay. In my mind, eBay is only a marketing device to lure folks into their used car sales lots. But regardless of that,... I just did a quick look on eBay...

Quick search came up with 3 1989 G50 930's, two are Cabrio's (so NOT the same in my book), one at $145k (supposedly 50k miles) with basically zero info on it, and the other Cabrio at $225k (15k miles). The 3rd is a Coupe at $195k (23k miles listed as including all documentation & maintenance history).

So how is $160k "over priced"? (not trying to be confrontational,... just asking for more justification,... since you may be a collector & have a LOT more knowledge than me) ... but especially if the OP can lay his own eyes on it, and pour over the documentation line by line?

It's usually pretty easy for most on RL Forum to "say" that folks should demand all history doc's,... but it is another matter to actually spend TIME looking at all those documents. In my experience it takes HOURS to do that.

When I was buying my 1991 964T back in the early 2000's,... the owner was willing to give me as much private time as I needed to sit down with his entire folder of docs. I did just that. Spent a LOT of time cross correlating dates & mileage, and work completed. It was a MUST for me to believe the track record & timelines that the documents laid out. Without that scrutiny, you're just taking a chance.

Back then, I had looked at, and driven many "questionable" 930's & 964T's. Many of them had been tracked & were quite beat up. When I think back to that time,... I now wonder where did all those cars go? It's 15 yrs later, and now ALL of them seem to be "CHERRY" (to pun the OP's handle name ;-) ... w/ no track time, spotless original paint, and basically no mods to suspension & motor. I gotta say that all of them had most of those mods when I test drove back then. I was happy to finally find one that met my criteria. It is HARD to tell now,... given that so many have been restored, or at least returned for original presentation.

So to me, $160k might not be unreasonable if it is the right car for OP, and all the timelines, maintenance & mileage records all line up.

Best of luck to Cherryblock !! (congrats on the incoming '16 GT3RS too!!)

IMO...if it is in the condition as mentioned...it is not "way" too high...but yes there is room to negotiate. Is it completely stock? I know of a very clean, stock '89 930 coupe (but with lower miles) that recently went for that price, albeit with fewer miles. If you find a clean example you like and are keeping it...get the price "in the range" and be happy. Good luck.

To be clear- the 160 asking price is not what I was referring too as too high it is the Hagerty Valuation guide that I'm referring to.

I have bought several six figure cars on ebay and never had any issues with them. Service records only is not indicative of the condition of the car. I always have the cars checked by an authorized dealer and then have a specialist do a paint inspection to make sure no panels have been repainted.

The market has softened up and one needs to be patient and keep searching for the right car.

I wish the OP much success in finding the right car.

An 84 Black/tan coupe just went unsold at Mecum here in Houston at 92K. That being said, auction cars in general are also some times not the cleanest or documented.

The market seems to have flattened a bit with a lot of inventory sitting for long periods of time.

For the kind of money that OP referred to you can get an absolute low mile, fully documented, condition 1 car I think.

Hagerty pumps pricing so people increase their coverages. More money for Hagerty. It also works to Hagerty's benefit as people think that pot of gold in their garage could experience something that would diminish it's value so they don't drive them anywhere. And lastly if you insure to those stupid Hagerty numbers and you do have a mishap you better hope its a good one cuz they will want to fix it.

89 coupe is the best of the post "930" vin cars because of the g50 box, but I wouldn't pay 160,000 for one with 60,000 miles on the clock, I don't care how good it looks. That is under 20,000 mile money if you ask me.

Great info on paint measurement

Thanks to all- I just couldn't wrap my head around the price/rarity (lack of) and mileage- I passed!
