Default When was the 85mph speedo installed?

Saw an eBay ad for a 79' that states it has the correct 85mph speedo. I thought they were installed when re introduced in 86'. Right or wrong?

A small group of North American 1979 Model Year 2nd Build Type 930’s had 85 MPH Speedometers. The 85 MPH Speedometers were required by the NHTSA on vehicles produced starting in September 1979. As these US delivery 2nd Build Type 930’s were actually produced during Porsche’s 1980 production run they actually shared similar 1980 parts with the 1980 MY 911’s. The NA 1979 MY 2nd Build Type 930’s can also be identified by the 1980 Production Numbers they share with other like 1980 MY Porches and these similarly dated 1980 MY NA 911’s (924’s and 928’s also) had 85 MPH Speedometers as well. The 85 MPH Speedometer went away (thankfully) during 1982.

If the 1979 930 you refer to has a 9/79 to 12/79 Build, it should have an 85 MPH Speedometer. By 1986, when the 930 returned to the US, the “normal Speedometer” was back.

7-12-1979 U.S. 930 Turbo would have a 150 mph speedo. The only U.S. 930's that ever had a 180 mph speedo was the 1976 model year.

U.S. 930’s built from September to December 1979 were equipped with 85 mph speedometers (chassis # 9309800817 to 9309801200). The U.S. law was outlined in a NHTSA regulation that was not repealed in March of 1982 (after President Reagan took office).

Don't forget tho that 07-12-79 means 7 Dec 1979 in Germany, not July 12, 1979
