Default '86 930 -- Worth it to add LSD or TBD ?

I am interested in buying a 930, but it doesn't have LSD

Is it worth it to add LSD or TBD (torque biasing differential) ?

I do not plan to track it regularly, but every once in a while yes

4 speed gearbox with lots of lag, I believe adding a differential is a plus on these cars

Thanks in advance for your comments !

Odd that it doesn't already have it although the clutch plates would probably be somewhat worn by now if it did. A stock 930 isn't much of a track beast if you ask me. Stock intercooler on race track results in heat soak.

In my opinion these cars are getting almost too expensive to run on the track. There are much better track toys - an early 996TT is a blast and a decent one costs 40% of the value of a nice 930 these days.

Thanks for your replies

When I say track it, I mean maybe 2-3 times a year go to a track to be able to drive it fast in straight line and have fun on the corners, but not as if I was driving a GT3

And when driving fast on public roads, I want to feel safer with an LSD

So, worth it or not ?

For sure the '86 930 I want to buy doesn't have OEM LSD

I understand wanting to go fast - that's what these things were made to do, and a track is the place to do it. I would think a LSD would be a good thing to have; I actually assumed they all had it. What's it cost?

A limited slip diff is a good idea in a 930. If you increase the horsepower it will become a must have. I was under the impression they all had them stock? Maybe not?
930's that are all stock are great cars but not without a lot of mods, do they make a great track weapon.
Once they are fully modified and lightened they are awesome.
I have 2 highly modified 930's. One's a street car. The other is built specially for the track. I won't take my street 930 to the track. It would be too heavy. If you're running a stock intercooler you will learn what heat soak is quickly. Not much fun. I added a quaife diff to my street car. It made a huge difference under boost. Before I had it the car would move over a whole lane on the expressway under full boost....now it tracks straight and is very manageable. 930's make fantastic track cars if they are properly built.

LSD was optional for all 930's, 1975-1989. RoW 930's are less likely to have LSD than U.S. 930's.

Agree with mussberger, 930s are no longer hobby cars. They are far too valuable now. Prices have doubled in a year!
Not only wouldn't I track a 930, but I'd leave it stock, bone stock. No LSD.
Heat soak is when the intercooler simply isn't up to the task of cooling the charged air, hot air means laaaag, running poorly and slowly. Not fun.

Most 930s did not get an LSD from the factory.

If it were my car I would install an LSD or more likely a TBD. They really enhance the driving experience. However I wouldn't spend all that labor until the gearbox was coming out for something else, specifically a clutch job or full rebuild of the gearbox. Too expensive as just a nice to have part.
