Default Exhaust Insulating Wrap ??

Has anyone used this stuff on their turbo? What are the advantages & disadvantages? Is it worth it? Would I be able to tell a difference in performance on a STOCK 94 3.6 turbo in the So. CA heat?

I was considering the following products:

http://www.thermotec.com/products/full/11001/11001.html (Black Graphite)
http://www.thermotec.com/products/full/15001/15001.html (Turbo Wrap)

THX in advance for your help!

More than once I've read how exhaust insulation helps turbo motors, reduced lag being the main benefit though some power gain could be assumed. Mebbe 100-200rpm and 5hp?.. I really have no idea but every little bit helps.

Hi:

Good question,....

In principle, insulating the pipes between the heads and the turbocharger speeds up throttle response (boost lag reduction) by containing the heat in the exhaust stream, and maintaining exhaust velocities. It makes a small but noticable difference in throttle response,...

Trouble is, those exhaust pipe wraps also do a fine job of containing moisture against the tubing and accelerating corrosion. Its a surefire way to accelerate the demise of the exhaust system.

The modern way to accomplish the very same benefits is by using Ceramic-Metallic thermal barrier coatings that are sprayed into the exhaust system and baked to cure them. Cermichrome is one example, and there are many others.

In the case of turbocharged engines, the Cermichrome coating would not be the appropriate one to use since this product cannot tolerate the 1600 deg F heat found in turbo motors. There are others that are (not silver) that work very well in these applications.
