Default Wevo short shift kit...

Done quite a few things to my 88 cabriolet in the last couple of weeks including new Bilstein Sports, strut mounts, ss brake lines, strut bar, tires, and a few odds and ends. I will be doing tie rods and all suspension bushings, new factory top, and amplifier installation once the cold winter settles in and the car won't be driven as much.

I just finished installing the Wevo short shift kit and the difference in the throws is amazing - really looking forward to how it performs in real driving. I am still putting the car back together and finishing up the detail around the base of the shifter with the original leather. I have decided to leave the base of the shifter exposed, so the opening on the center console needs to be finished out.

Here are a couple of pics...(will add more once I finish the install)

Many thanks for the REX on the installation, what are your feelings on the use ? I live in France and I'm very keen on having one as well on my 930 since my gear box has been rebuilt.
Thanks, Olivier

The Wevo shifter is much, much better than stock. Shifting the gears is pretty smooth and distinct with much less throw. My tranny has been rebuilt with a new clutch and this shifter works very well when everything else is in order. I would also recommend replacing the shift rod coupler if you do this upgrade.

Other than shorter throw (and good looks), what do you find is much, much better about this shifter?

The Wevo shifter is a huge improvement over the stock. The throws are much crisper. No slop whatsoever. I had this shifter in my 930(when I had my 4 short geared tranny) and loved it. When I switched to a Ruf 5 speed I decided to go with a Rennshift shifter(has a reverse lockout). Honestly either shifter works much better than stock. The plus side for purist is that Wevo offers a stock looking shifter yet performs like all of their other shifters....

I do love my RennShift though..

I should get one in the short term ;-) Is the installation not too difficult, I've searched on Youtube but didn't find any tuto on it.
It is advised to install the PSJ as well with the kit but some people say that this can damage the gear box on the long term, not enough flexibility in the linkage ? Does some of you use both the kit and the PSJ for a long time ?

Speednme basically answers your question. The original felt like I was rowing a boat oar. I am also used to driving a 996tt with a ssk as my daily, so I could feel the difference pop out.

Agree. Thanks for the input.

You will probably not find any tutorials for this shifter. I guess I should have made a video while dong the install on mine. If you follow the directions closely, you should have no problem. That said, you will most likely need to adjust the shift coupler whether you replace it or not in order to align the shifter properly. Otherwise, you will have problems engaging some of the gears.

Also, you might want to be prepared to sand and paint the base since it is cast aluminum. It does not look very clean when you expose it, especially compared to the finely machined Wevo unit.

Thank you mmm951 for the feed back, I should go for it in the coming months with a set of new shock absorbers: Bilstein sport for the front and Bilstein "1000 Lakes" for the rear.

Someone in my club advised me not to use the Bilstein sport up front and use the HD instead, but keep the sports in the rear. I was given the impression the ride would be really rough. I did not agree with this line of reasoning since the shocks are engineered to work together. Mixing them will give different results with valving and damper rod length.

After installation, I am very happy with the Sports all the way around. The car drives great and is composed.

What is the 1000 lakes version?

1000 Lakes is the traduction I did for the "1000 lacs" Bilstein serie, they are more designed for rallye use but they are not smooth, even a bit harder than the "road/sport".
The mix of road/sport for the front and "rallye" for the rear has been advised to me by a few owners on the French forum, they tried several options and they all agree on it so I'll try as well.
