Default 1st gear Launch RPM's

930-istas,

At what RPMs do you engage 1st gear in during normal stop and go style driving.

I'm NOT asking about racing Vipers at stop lights.

'bout 20mph or so, I don't like to lug it.. quite a few posters says it's kinda tough but i just match revs and it slips in nice, no double clutching.. second gear is another matter(#$&! synchro)

o did you mean when leaving a light?.. i dunno.. if I'm just pokin around(nevar!) i'll just slip it out holding steady @2krpm.. for a quick start ill hold 4krpm and slip it fairly quickly while flooring it.. it bogs a lilttle but it's a quick yet non-clutch-destroying method.. i can't really spin AO32R's from a start anyway, the clutch just slips.. they light up at 30mph though

Interesting, it would be nice to see someone have a good launch in a modified 930.

Perhaps my use of the word "launch" has too aggressive of a connotation for what I'm asking about.

Really, all I want to know is when engaging the clutch in 1st gear when driving 'about town' what RPM's do you use?

I've been blipping the throttle up to 2000-2500 and then letting it settle to 1000-1500 as the clutch engages. I want to know if this is the preferred method, or am I over-revving, thus wearing the clutch needlessly?

Thank you in Advance to all who answer.

My car is modified a little and the idle speed is a bit less than when stock (about 600-700 now vs. 1000 rpm when stock). If I'm not "in a hurry", I will usually let the clutch out as the accelerator brings the revs up to about 1000. As the clutch engages, the rpms drop ever so slightly, then the clutch is out, fully engaged and off we go. Smooth as silk, neither engine nor clutch complain, minimal wear and tear on both. Hope this helps.

My response is similar to Ken's. I really did not know the answer to this until I watched what I was doing today driving. I see maybe 1200RPM starting out, and it stays there pretty until the clutch is fully out. It is really a pretty smooth and easy start, and I see no need to rev it higher. The only reason I would rev it more is of I did not want to wait for boost to build in 1st, such as a 0-60 run or 1/4 mile. I do not do this often since I recognize the wear on the clutch is high doing this.
