Default 930 1979 - leaded petrol

Hi guys,
I`m new here. Just bought 1979 930, made for Swiss market. Can you please let me know if I need to add any PB additives into the petrol or can I run the car on unleaded 98+ octane petrol?
Thanks a lot!
Jirka

Hi Jirka,

I think you should be just fine running unleaded 98+ octane petrol without any PB additives as long as you have an unmodified '79 Euro 930. Through 1979 all 930's, North American and RoW, can run leaded or unleaded fuel.

By 1979, Porsche was using valve seats that did not require tetraethyl lead. If you feel uncomfortable, you can do the additive every other tank full. A downside of leaded fuel is sparkplug life.

In the States we have the additional issue of ethanol (ethyl alcohol) in our fuel which is not great for the CIS system but I am not aware if it has found its way into Swiss petrol.

Another consideration with your new 930 is to be sure you are running the proper level of ZDDP (Zinc dithiophosphate) in the oil you use. ZDDP is necessary in flat tappet and lifter configurations that see high pressure/sheer forces and it is necessary for proper lubrication. There are plenty of threads here on RENNLIST to answer most if not all ZDDP questions.

Great to hear you bought a '79 930. How about posting some pictures and information on your new Porsche?

Welcome!

Bud

Thank you Bud!
Here are some pictures!

May I have one more question. Do you have any idea how were the engines numbered? There is no engine no in Swiss registration certificate, just part of the number in emission certificate compared to the engine.
Thanks for any hints

Jirka

Nice looking 930! Congratulations.

The engine type for a '79 RoW 930 is; 930/60 and was the same type used in the Euro cars from 1978 through 1981.

Your engine number should begin with 679xxxx, with the last 4 digits being the consecutive serial number for your year

I noticed you do not have the snorkel headlight washers - is your '79 a very late serial number? Also, do not see a fender mounted antenna - no radio?

Thank you Bud! in Swiss emission certificate there is just 930/60, on the engine there is 6790268, so it seems to be ok:-) My VIN ends with 0246. In the manual are pictured snorkel shaped washer but I have seen more cars from 1979 with the one I have on the car. Do you think these are non original? I guess there was an antenna, but one day has been removed and the whole in fender closed and repainted - at least it looked like in the wheel arch. There is stupid modern Blaupunkt radio now. Btw any tips for the right replacement?:-) Cheers,
Jirka

...and one more question re turbo pressure. What is the proper value? In the manual there is 0,8 bar / 4000revs, correct or real life is different?

0.8 bar is correct...if everything is working as it should be.

Jirka,

There were 809 RoW 930's produced in 1979. Your #0246 was likely built early in the 1979 calendar year (January?) and should have the snorkel washer jets not the flat ones.

In the late 70's, Porsche tended to pull parts in near sequence but they seldom if ever made an exact one on one number match when it came to chassis, engine, or transmission mating. Your #0268 engine seems close enough to your chassis number to probably be correct.

If your 930 came with a radio from the factory it was a European version Blaupunkt CR Radio, I have attached a picture of the USA CR from my '79 930.

The one that is correct for your car would be the same "Flat ****" style but it will have a shorter FM frequency range (104 or 106MHZ?). Your 930 also would have had the power Hirschmann antenna that electronically extended and retracted when the radio was turned on and off. Did someone replace your windshield with one that has an embedded antenna?

Bud

Hi I had just one chance to drive the car on open road but the clock shows rather 0,6 bar around 5000revs so hope it doesn't mean immediate work on turbo...

Hi Bud,
thanks again!
I have to inspect front windscreen and antenna installation on the car. I guess we have FM 88-104MHz here in Europe, will try to search for proper replacement.

When you say "clock", are you referring to an aftermarket boost gauge?

Low boost is typically indicative of a boost leak or an exhaust restriction.

Re: boost leak, check/replace O-rings at turbo compressor outlet, intercooler, and throttle body.

Re: exhaust restriction, does your Swiss market car have a catalytic convertor? If so, replace with OE or aftermarket cat-delete pipe. If not, check for obstruction [mouse nest] in muffler.

Hi Allen,
I read the pressure on central rev counter gauge. The car goes properly - checked with other 930 owners. The car doesn't have catalytic convertor. Is there any other way how to check turbo compressor please? Thank you,
Jiri

Jiri, did you ever get your questions answered?

What boost pressure are you seeing at wide open throttle in 2nd and 3rd gear between 4000 and 6000 revs? If everything is working correctly, the boost gauge in the tachometer should register 0.8 bar.

Why do you suspect something is wrong with your turbo compressor?
