Talking Performance upgrades?? for 930

I have a 1988 930 with an upgraded intercooler, 1.0 boost spring, K-27 turbo and borla quad exhaust. I have had the car dynoed at 307hp at the rear wheels and am interested in achieving better performance. I would like to know without having to pull the engine apart/rebuild it, what performance upgrades in addition, can I do to maximize performance?(for ex. air/fuel delivery, headers, gear changes, camshafts, what would give me the best horsepower/performance value for the buck?)
Thank you in advance.

-sc or 964 cams
-headers reduce turbo lag and give a few horses
-a boost controller to hold wastegate shut till max boost (or something like that)
-5 speed or lower gearing
-weight reduction

FWIW I basically just rehash what the more experienced people on this board think.

Don't forget some sort of fuel enrichment so you don't burn it up.

What about Powerflow Air intake? Claim to improve ~20hp?

From what I have read even though a lot of Porsche enthusiasts have placed an open element filter like K&N, I really doubt 20 hp would happen. As a reasonable estimate I would say 5-8 hp which you would not feel realistically. As well, is there not an issue of more dust/dirt getting past the K&N filter under load as compared to a stock filter? I am not really sure and I am considering this minor upgrade but dont know if it is worth the money or effort.

Chirs930,

I have the K&N cone type air filter on my Acura Integra for 86k miles with no problems so far. I clean it and oil it about once a year with great results.

I've also installed one on my '92 C2 Turbo since last October. But I have not driven it much to know of any negative effects on the Porsche.

In term of performance, I don't think there is great improvement with just the K&N air filter alone. My car has muffler bypass also and I notice there is a definite improvement in throttle response and turbo lag. I also have Lee Rice fuel enrichment device which helps with throttle response a lot too.

Best regards, <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

When it comes to replacing the cam and headers, what type of real horsepower/torque increases are we talking about? Lets say I went with sc cams and BB headers/muffler.

If your car is an 86 or newer US model, then it needs to have the thermo reactors replaced with either euro or aftermarket ones in order to take advantage of any real HP gains from other components (K27, IC, Cams, etc.) That is probably the BEST place to start for those cars.

Actually, the 86 or newer US 930's have a catalytic converter; the '78-'79 US 930's had the thermal reactors. Although the catalytic is not as bad as the thermal reactors, replacing the muffler to a euro style muffler (non-catalytic converter)should net you an additional 15-20 hp. If you're in California, I wouldn't do the 1 bar spring, unless you're willing to mix in some race gas every time you fill up. Our gas sucks.

Did you do the headers? Better do something with fuel enrichment before you melt the damn thing.

If you want really big power then there's always
<a href="http://www.getfuelinjected.com/" target="_blank">Engine Management!</a>

It's all the rage this year.

No I have not done the headers as of yet. In terms of a fuel enrichment kit I was told that they are not that accurate in their fuel dispersion and as such some cylinders run lean and others rich which is basically a bad combination. Can you give me some details on this engine management kit?

I've heard the CIS system on the 930 is good for up to 450 HP. If this true, then why add a fuel enrichment? Too much fuel will wash the oil off your cylinder walls, foul your plugs, waste gas, etc. At what point do you add it?

My '87 930 with GHL headers, K27-7200, Kokeln intercooler, gutted B&B muffler and 1 bar spring has dynoed at 456 rwhp. I'm going to install the APEXi AVC-R EBC and MSD 6AL this weekend, then dyno it again.

Just my .02

Jim,

Can you give me more details on your engine? 456rwhp is really good for the mods you've got. I have similar parts and can only pull 340rwhp.

Thanks,

John

Hey John,

After reading your post and going back to mine, I realized my fingers made a mistake. It should have read 346 rwhp, so with similar mods we're at about the same rwhp.

My dyno guy said the MSD will help out quite a bit, as he could see some breaking up. In addition this was also with a slipping clutch, which I replaced a few weeks ago. Sorry for the mix up.

Regards,
Jim

Odd thing is I lost TQ on this last dyno run. Had a small issue with the vacume/advance thing on my distributor so I need to retest. But losing 10 foot pounds was a bit odd. This after adding a Kokeln, GHL headers/muffler, and SC330 cams.
