Question 930 Trans or G50 ?

I need some advise. My car is a 78SC.I am considering cutting my torque tubes and puting in a G50 or G50/50 from a 89 turbo if I can find one. My other choice is I can put a 77 930 Turbo with racing gears already set up for my ruf 3.4 btr turbo and I won't have to cut the torque tubes.I'd like to get some feedback.
Thanks,
Joel

Joel: If the intent of a new tranny is to improve gear ratios so the turbo spools more quickly, then the question is which tranny has the best ratios? The G50, G50/50, or the 930 with racing gears already set up for your setup?

(BTW, I would think a G50/50 (stock tranny for the '89 930) is going to be pretty hard to find. They are very desirable making them a "hot" commodity.)

Seems to me you'd be better off NOT cutting the car and using the race tranny.

In my opinion, it wouldn't matter if the race tranny is only a four speed - how much time are you going to spend in that 5th gear (if you get the G50 or G50/50)? I'd rather have the gearing so the turbo was spooling more quickly in the three lower gears (speeds you are most likely to driving anyway), and perhaps that is achieved best with the racing tranny.

Just my two-cents worth.

There are several people the will shorten a G50 trans for you. I agree the G50/50 or G50/52 (91-92) are going to be hard to find. I know of one shop, DeMan Motorsports that installs standard G50 in 500hp Turbos with much success. I believe shortening the trans will eliminate the need to modify your chassis with the exception of installing the hydrolic pedal setup.

5 speed trans or regeared 4 speed is the way to go to keep the car in its powerband and makes a big difference.

Joel,
I have run and owned both. Let me add my .005 worth here. When using a moded turbo as you suggest the out come with a 4 speed is pleasurable. The reason is the 5 speed and even the 6 speed is short enough when you are making good power you are shifting faster than you can think. Some think that the G50 is faster than the 930 in stock form. I really disagree, it has more to do with the driver. My 930 with stock 930 tranny and moded motor would clock 11.8s in the 1/4 all day long. When I bumped the HP to 600 it still helped me pull away from a light. The G50 carrries a much shorter gear and under normal driving is a help, but the minute you hit the gas you had better shift. It becomes an automatic movement or bumping the rev limiter is a common thing. The 930 give a second to breath if you can figure out how to use it. I don't mind a little taller gear, not to mention when I am running the 4 speed offers one less gear I have to hit on the strip. If the car is a street car keep that in mind. There are many options on this. You should drive a G50 and imagine your power behind it and sample a 930. For me it was a simple choice, I liked doing 100+ in second gear Heck, the 6 speed in my TT is going to get a little taller first gear. I continuously bump the limiter when the tires snap loose.
