Default How to use VIN to find original delivery?

Where can I find the original delivery information using my older 10 digit VIN?

A 10 digit 930 VIN generally has no information that can help with the original delivery if specific information is what you are looking for.

It can only identify if the car was built for delivery to;
  • North America
  • Japan
  • or, RoW (Rest of the World) destinations

The 10 digit 930 VIN can also identify if the chassis was used for 934 or 935 build purposes. Other than that, the only other things identifiable are the year, body type (all were coupes), or serial sequence.

The only exception is, if you match the Vin with the Engine number on NA '78 or '79 930's you can identify if the 930 was a California or 49 State delivery.

OK, thanks for the response. My VIN is 9309800977 so it was built late in the 79 production.

Yes, your VIN identifies your 930 as a late 1979 Model Year North American Build car. Likely built in 10/79? I say North American Build and not US Build because Porsche delivered 930980xxxx 930’s to both the US and Canada in 1979. What I don’t know is if they continued to export them to Canada as 1979 MY cars at the same late point in time as your #0977.

Quite interestingly, even though your 930 is classified as a 1979 MY, it was built on the same assembly line in Stuttgart alongside 1980 MY 911’s and RoW 930’s and, unlike the early build NA ’79 930’s, your 930 has all of the 1980 changes that were being installed on the US export 1980 cars at the time.

I am sure my 930 is a California car, but i will check the engine number. What were the changes/improvements that were made on the later 930s?

You can check the small number (flash #) just near the engine SN on the case. This will indicate 49 state car or California car.
California engine ignition timing is set differently from the 49 state car as well.
930/63 is the 1978-79 California 3.3 930 engine
930/61 is the 1978-79 49 state 3.3. 930 engine
To answer your question on what improvements were made to the newer 930s, that's complicated.
The years 1980- 84 were Euro+ROW models, and grey market cars here. Then back here at the Dealerships as 911 turbos 1985-89.
Heavier car, ecu management, catalytic convertors, and finally a 5
speed gearbox !
Some people call the later years improved, or too heavy, or not improved at all. I would take any year 930 into my corral .

I think the OP is referring to specifically what was different between the early and late 79 cars- so a couple items changed that I can remember off the top of my head - the headlight washer jets went from the large "snorkel" type to the small button type, the speedo also went from 150 MPH to a federally mandated 85 MPH. Do a search and you can pin down timeframe when these changes occur. Most of the 85 MPH speedo's came out - that creates some skepticism around low mileage claims on these cars.

Here’s a detailed breakout for the 1979 model year. Note, the transition dates are not set in stone as some of the changes may have occurred later (or earlier) than stated (i.e., flush headlight washers earlier than #0818, etc.):

U.S. 1979 model year (to August 1979) – 806 produced
Chassis Number - 9309800011 to 9309800817
Snorkel headlight washers and older style A/C center vents

(U.S. and RoW) Mid-1979 Model Year

Updated A/C center vents
Updated Blaupunkt radio *****

U.S. continue 1979 series – 384 produced

Chassis Number – 9309800818 to 9309801000
Flush headlight washers
(U.S. only) 85 mph speedometer (mandated by Sep 79, U.S. Federal Law)

Chassis Number – 9309801000 to 9309801200. Last of the 10-digit 930 chassis numbers produced in November 1979 with two documented 930’s (to-date) produced in December 1979 (1115 and 1156)
Nippondenso air conditioner compressor (somewhere around VIN 1000+)
(U.S. only) Adjustable headlight bezels (somewhere around VIN 1000+)
(U.S. only) Light Red leather interior (code 95) added to interior colors yellow (code 96) and white (code 97) that had a black dash, door tops, rear deck and upper trim. #1200 was the last 930 chassis number delivered with standard all-leather interior
(1980 RoW only) Standard leather interior colors changed from 1979 (black, brown and cork) to 1980 (black, brown, and beige). Standard interior trim for RoW 911 Turbos was changed from leather to leatherette; rest of the interior continued the use leather on the seats (rear of backrest/surround) and inlay
