A 10 digit 930 VIN generally has no information that can help with the original delivery if specific information is what you are looking for.
It can only identify if the car was built for delivery to;
The 10 digit 930 VIN can also identify if the chassis was used for 934 or 935 build purposes. Other than that, the only other things identifiable are the year, body type (all were coupes), or serial sequence.
The only exception is, if you match the Vin with the Engine number on NA '78 or '79 930's you can identify if the 930 was a California or 49 State delivery.

Yes, your VIN identifies your 930 as a late 1979 Model Year North American Build car. Likely built in 10/79? I say North American Build and not US Build because Porsche delivered 930980xxxx 930’s to both the US and Canada in 1979. What I don’t know is if they continued to export them to Canada as 1979 MY cars at the same late point in time as your #0977.
Quite interestingly, even though your 930 is classified as a 1979 MY, it was built on the same assembly line in Stuttgart alongside 1980 MY 911’s and RoW 930’s and, unlike the early build NA ’79 930’s, your 930 has all of the 1980 changes that were being installed on the US export 1980 cars at the time.

California engine ignition timing is set differently from the 49 state car as well.
930/63 is the 1978-79 California 3.3 930 engine
930/61 is the 1978-79 49 state 3.3. 930 engine
To answer your question on what improvements were made to the newer 930s, that's complicated.
The years 1980- 84 were Euro+ROW models, and grey market cars here. Then back here at the Dealerships as 911 turbos 1985-89.
Heavier car, ecu management, catalytic convertors, and finally a 5
speed gearbox !
Some people call the later years improved, or too heavy, or not improved at all. I would take any year 930 into my corral .
