Post 1979 porsche 930 turbo

HI My dad is going to be buying a 1979 porsche 930 turbo. It's black. The guy is asking 14700. really cheap. The only thing is that it has a dent in the front right fender, and the front right wheel is damaged. Should he still buy it? he has hopes of fixing that problem, then modifying. Is it worth it? Thanks.

What about the rest of the car? An engine rebuilt on a Turbo is very expensive, from $10k and up. Suspension pieces are not cheap either.

Make sure you have a PPI done on this car or any Porsche you want to buy.

Good luck,

Sonny

PPI? I doubt it'll need an engine rebuild.

An '79 930 Turbo is worth somewhere around $25k. This car is asking for $14700.

Do you think the damage is about $10k?

From what you described, the damage is minor. Why would a car with minor damage to one corner (front) would be so cheap, unless there are other issues. I am just questioning the cheapness of the car. There may be more things wrong underneath.

Regards,

Sonny
ps: PPI = Pre purchase Inspection - to make sure that you know what you are into with regard to all aspect of the car.

I agree with Sonny Vo, get a PPI done for sure. A $15,000 post '77 911 turbo is nearly un-heard of in that kind of condition (it would make a lot more sense if the whole right-front side of the car needed replacing).

How do you know? You can't see low compression by looking at the outside of the engine.

That's true. That's what I'm assuming. I'll get back to you guys about the condition. Thanks for the replies.

Watch for broken cylinder studs. I bought my 930 5 years ago for a seemingly cheap CDN$20K (US$14). It ran well but a little rough near the redline. During my first tune-up they found a broken cylinder stud - not abnormal for that car. That meant doing a top-end rebuild. $10K later all was well.

Have it inspected by someone who really knows Turbos. Check with your local Porsche club.

As for modifying it, be careful. It's v-e-r-y addictive. I annually spend more than I paid for it in maintenance and mods.

I just got into a 78' 930 for 18k with 80k miles. That was a good deal considering the upgrades. What is the mileage on this car? I was looking at a 79 a few years back with an asking price of 17k. When I saw the car and the condition of the engine, an offer was made for 12.5K and accepted. Unfortunately, the garage where it was having a PPI done, bought it out from under me. What sleazes. The message here is to act if you feel good about the car. There are many 25K cars out there as well, with potential 10k problems. If its original, most of the parts are there, then factor an engine rebuild into your long term plans. If those dollars work, I would not hesitate. You do not typically see these cars go for less than 18k.

That sounds like lawsuit bait. Although I'm not sure how you could get anything done without a lawyer, which would make it more expensive than it's worth.

Reminds me of when I found a near-perfect shell (blown motor) in a junkyard that was fodder for parting out. The owner was never there, so I had to keep leaving messages with an employee about me buying the whole thing so I could put a motor of my own in it. I finally gave up trying, then saw the employee about a month later driving the car.

rick. I don't know what the mileage is, but it looks like a good deal. I'll make sure to look for all of those problems. Thanks again guys.

No one mentioned the front end damage on the car, so let me also suggest you make sure the car is straight. It doesn't take that big of a hit to get a twist, buckle, or bend in the unibody that makes it really difficult to get a good alignment and cornerbalance.

Straightening these cars is very expensive - be careful.
