Post Best Radar Protection

What do you all use for radar detection? I'm leaning towards either the Escort 8500 or the SR1. The 8500 is supposed to be a really good unit, but I like the in-dash installation of th SR1. Bt at twice the price, I'm not sure if it's the right way to go. Any coaching?

Having had many detectors over the last 20 years, I currently own a Valentine-1. Once you've become accustomed the the V1's directional abilities, you'll never go back to a conventional detector. I've had several Escorts, and Passports before.

Sure, one of the reviews says the latest Passport warned them 5 miles ahead of the V1, but that's pretty much useless information. The V1 gives tons of warning and it tells you where the radar actually is. It also makes it really easy to tell the difference between door openers, radar, and doors and radar at the same time. It makes a huge difference.

As for the built-in, if you get caught where detectors are illegal, they'll disassemble your car until it's found. If they catch you, it's better just to hand it to them.

BTW: In Ontario, I have gotten several detectors back by pleading not guilty based on Canadian constitutional grounds. They won't risk having the law declared unconstitutional, so they'll just drop the charges.

Thumbs up

Spen the extra $$ and get the K40. It has front and rear undetectable sensors that hardly ever pick up any false signals. I can't say how many times it's saved me from expensive speeding tix.

Question

I have a Valentine-1 that is currently hard wired into my M3. Since they are illegal in Ontario I have it in a discrete location. Any suggestions about locating it in the 930? So far I have had it mounted with the suction cups on the windshield, but it seams way too brazen here.

I run a K40 with the laser diffuser/detector in my 993. Best detector I have had, and the noise is very audible and pleasant. I have had all the Cincinatti Microwave products over the years and find them average at best. Have heard many raves on the V-1, but no first hand experience. I have learned to only speed if other speeders are ahead of me--I let them take the bullet so to speak.

I just suction the V1 to the dash below the wipers. I just keep an eye out and pull it down if anything suspicious approaches. I've also stopped using it unless I'm actually in danger of getting a ticket.

I once had a brand new Escort for about 20 minutes because I hit the brakes when it went off. I was driving my brother's rusting Accord in heavy holiday traffic. Then I looked down and saw I was not actually speeding. The Cop pulled me out of the crowd and said if I didn't hand over the detector he was going to have to search the car. I said go ahead. Just then the coiled cord fell dangling out of my brother's shorts. The Cop was killing himself laughing.
