Post G50 Conversion Help

I am seriously thinking of upgrading my 1978 930 transmission from a 915 [now in car] to a G50 and would like to speak with any of the members who have done this before to make sure I know what I am getting myself into. thanks. Also looking for all the systems and parts that I will need. thanks

If you have a 78 930 then you should have the 930 4 speed not the 915 5 speed. The 930 transmission is a lot stronger than the 915 which only had to cope with non-turbo horsepower. I think there are also 2 different G50s. One for the Carrera, and a stronger one for the 89 930. If you put the non-turbo transmission in it, you won't be able to make all the engine mods these cars love to have.

When I asked my mechanic, he said it was very expensive because you have to modify the rear suspension to make room for it.

You could probably make much better use of the money by giving yourself more power and torque. Then the gearing would be less of an issue.

I have a modified 81 930 with the 4 speed and on the track I can catch 993 Twin Turbos with their 6 speeds. If you have torque, who needs gears?

I agree with you and the strenght of the 930 box. My car came with the 915 installed by the previous owner. I also received the original 930 box with the car and have thought about using it. Since posting I spoke with Paul at Guard Transmissions and he is planning to release in the next few months a mod kit to add a 5th gear to the original 930 gearboxes and he says that it will be better and cheaper than a G50 conversion. So .... I may decide to nurse my 915 for now until the mod kit is released and then upgrade my 930 box to a 5 speed before reinstalling in my car. Unless a good reasonably priced G50 falls into my lap .... then I will be scrambling for G50 conversion parts again.

That's an interesting idea. Did he say what it might cost? It can't be cheap. You'd either have to change all the gear ratios or change the ring and pinion. Either way, Ouch!

NO he did not and since it is not in production yet I can understand why. I agree that it will not be cheap since you would need an entire set of close ratio gears to make it work.
