Post Help re: Transmission

Hi all I need help I have a 911 slant nose 3.0 turbo with a 5 speed transmission.
It has problems going into 1st gear I have to down shift from 2nd and roll it into first gear. I have lost 3rd gear completely
it will not mesh up just grind. 2nd 4th and 5th no issues. I don't have a mechanic I trust here in orange county, I was quoted $5000 for a 4 speed transmission replacement. I don't have that kind of dinero at this time (out of work). Is it possible to fix and or rebuild the 1st and 3rd gears for a more reasonable amount? until i can afford to purchase a 4 speed transmission. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
thanks

Hello,

I am pretty sure that the gears can be replaced individually, and hence save on costs. I am based in the UK and was quoted areound $500 to replace the 3rd gear synchro. I am told that most of this labour,as the parts are comparatively cheap.

Hope this helps.

A rebuild for a 4 speed is probably around US$1000-$1500. The parts are expensive and there is the labour.

Depending on what year your car is you may have difficulty swapping to a 4 Speed transmission. The only years the 5 speed was available from the factory was 89, 91-92 and 94 and the chassis of the 930 is physically different to accomodate the larger 5 speed transmission. Ruf did make a 5 speed, but it really uses a 4 speed and adds an additional gear. I would call Patrick Motorsports (602-244-0911) since they have extensive knowledge in the G50/50 and G50/52 transmissions from the factory as well as conversion into earlier cars. Remember, you will have to remove you engine and transmission from the car which will add about 10 hours labor for removal and reinstallation. Unfortunately there really is no inexpensive way out.

Depending on which 5-speed you have (I have the Ruf 5-speed)you should certainly be able to replace just the damaged gears or synchros. But as stated above, you are going to sink in about $1000 just to pull and reinstall the engine and transmision no matter which option you do. Personaly, I think you would miss the 5-speed. It keeps you on boost beter than the 4-speed. My reco would be to rebuild yor 5-speed. Good luck!

Call Vision Motorsports in Laguna Hills,949-770-2421, ask for Victor or Dwaine. These guys do my wrench work and are honest and resonably priced. I think you can trust these folks to give you a straight answer on cost.
Hope this helps, Blake.
P.S. I live close by in Tustin.
