Post 17 inch wheels

I currently have 225 45 17 on my front and 255 40 17 on the rear of my 89 930. The car came with this setup and i was wondering what the largest rear tires i could get on the car would be with a 17 inch rim in the back? I don't want to change the overall diameter from the origional specs though. I think the car came with 245 55 16's. I would like a really wide rear setup!!!

Andy
My 86 turbo has 9.0x17 front wheels with 255/40-17 Michelin Pilot Sports; and 11.0x17 rears with 315/35-17 Pilot Sports.
Its a great setup and the wheels/tires fit the car perfectly, but the only thing I would have done differently is perhaps go with a slightly narrower tire in the front. When the tires are new they are so big they wander a bit. After they wear down that goes away, however.

Andy,
No, it didnt affect the speedometer reading. As you know, the outside diameter is what affects it, not the width of the tires. Even though the stock wheels were 15" and the new ones are 17", the outside diameter of the wheels, though larger, wasnt that much of a change because the tires were much lower profile. However it took a little getting used to going from the old 15" wheels to the wider ones. At first I didnt like the feel but now I do.

Sounds good, thanks for the info. Any pictures of your car with those steam rollers on it?

Andy, I have 235x45x17 fronts 8.5"wheels and 275x40x17 rears on 10" wheels. They work great. When I first installed the fronts they did wander a bit but now its fine. The original rears on your car should have been 245x45x16 on 9" wheels. I might try to go a little wider on the rear when I replace my tires. I'll have to ask and see ifI can use 315x35x17 on 10" wheels. Your width will be controlled somewhat by the width of your wheel. Jerry

Absolutely! I currently run 315/30/18 on my rear 11x18 wheels with no mods. They're factory 2001 tt wheels.

Question

I didn't think that they made a 315 for a 18" wheel. I also was told by Fikse that they would not recommend 18" wheels for the hard ride, fit and low tire selection. They did sugusted 8.5"x17" fronts and 9.5"x17" rears. I have to admit, I really like the wider tires but, I'm a little confused as which rims size, 17" or 18". Do you guys find the 18" wheels are ride hard? Do they really make a 315 for the rear?

I went and looked at the Pirelli and Conti web sites but they don't even represent the original vehicle yet. So I went to Hoosier and this is the biggest they sell - P335/30ZR-18. I couln't tell you about the harshness of my ride due to the heavily modified suspension, but I was told the same thing by Wheel Enhancement. I purchased the tires/wheels from Cory Jump at Planet9Eleven and have been happy though.

I have ridden in a 91 C2 turbo with 18 inch Fikse FM10s and 225 up front with 285/30 in the rear on a 10 inch wide wheel. They fit perfectly and look awesome. They ride fine on the track and the streets. The only problem is that I live in NJ and the streets are not in the best of shape. I had 18s on my last car and destroyed one a week after I installed them. I am going with 17s for the 930. Even though I think the 18s look awesome, it's just not practical for me. I really want the Fikse FM10s. They are a pain to keep clean though.

Yeah I have Fikse FM5's on my '86 with the 9.0x17 fronts and 11.0x17 rears. I am very happy with them except for these damn blemishes that have appeared on some of the wheels. The blemishes come off with Wenol polish, but I just hope this wont be a recurring problem. Has anyone else had that happen?(I am not knocking the wheels, by the way, they are excellent).

I have a 1978 930 and am running BBS race wheels 8.5x17 with 225's up front and 11x17 with 315/35/17 on the rears and it is great. However, when I upgraded to 993TT rotors and big reds I had to use 5/16 spacers on the rears which required rolling up the driver's side rear fender lip to get enough clearance ..... but the ride is fine and the handling is awesome.
