Post Looking to get a 930

I'm selling my carrera soon, and the four possible candidites were a 993, a Boxster, RSA, and a 930. After driving a Boxster, that idea went out the door. I drove a RSA, nice car, good power, and nice raw feel to it, similar to my car, but I just can't get myself to like the 964 Body style.

So my two choices are a 993 or a 930. I know both are different car. I'm just going to look for both and buy the cleanest and nicest car I can find with the best deal. I'm not in a rush.

So my question is, how much should I pay for a 86-88 Turbo?...how much more is the market commanding for a '89?

30K for an good mid mileage 86-88. 35K plus for an 89. The G50 is worth about 5K difference. If you plan on modifying the car to the 400 HP range, then the G50 is less important. If you want to leave the car stock or close to it, then the 5 speed basically pays for itself in the performance gain it gives you.

There are of course some great deals out there if you are willing to wait. Trader220, a new 911 Turbo owner, just bought what looks to be a very nice 89 with RUF 17 inch wheels, a larger intercooler, and some other upgrades for around $33,000 on eBay.

Having been through this search for a few weeks, I think you are going to be hard pressed to find a 86-88 930 for $30K unless its an 86 with 60K+ miles. The closest I found was a 86 930 for $31.5 (after wheeling and dealing) with 56K miles and it wasnt in the greatets shape. Perhaps other markets are more competitive, but where I live, $34K will be hard pressed to get you into a 87 or 88. A good 88 will be even harder. Just my shopping experience. It was one of the reasons I think Im giving up on the search and going after a well cared for 911 3.2 for $15K less. If I decide later on to move up to a 930 and sell the 911, that option would still exist.

If I could find a good 930 for $30K or under, I would have probably stuck with it and pulled the trigger. Since I dont think I will be able to for under 33K, Im not sure at this point in my life 15K premium for the turbo for me is worth it. If it was closer to 10K I might feel otherwise.

Sometimes you just have to back off and take a different approach for a while. I didnt find the prices in my market area to be akin to those spoken of here, so I'll just wait a few more years.

I might be willing to part with that 930 I just picked up for the right price. I also have an awesome 87 targa that is for sale. Both cars are in tip top shape all prices are negotiable. I have researched the market in these cars quite extensively in the past 2 months, and I have a very good idea of pricing.

I have seen 86's and 87's ( turbo ) cars trade in the sub 30k price range. Two of the about 12 I found listed in that range were actually good buys in my opinion. The ballance were junk, or needed more then 5 grand to bring them to acceptable levels. No doubt you'll be able to pay 32k to 35k for a straight clean 87 or 88 turbo with reasonable mileage.

Careful of shady dealers, some of which have been mentioned on this BB. They list what appear to be very clean straight turbo's on Ebay, but when you see em in person and have them checked out they come up lame. I have bought and sold over 15 911's and their variants in the past 8 years. I have worked up and down the price scale. Its just a hobby for me and a way to drive a great car for a period of time at a low cost.

Like I said, I have done the research and put in the time. I would be happy to share it with you if you have a specific question.

Got my 89 930 in Dec. with 38k miles, black and tan and very clean for mid-30k+

I searched for 3-4 months for the right car at the right price and ended up in Kansas City to get the right car. It had some minor issues, fuel smell (leaky dist, easy fix) and the clutch went 3k after I got it home. Other than that, she's in tip top shape. I found comparable 87-88s were about 5k-7k cheaper but I wanted the 89...

Good luck on the search!

Is it a factory slantnose of a chop shop?

I guess I could be interested at that price.

Im ending up going to look at a red 1988 930 near me after all. He wants 35.5K for it. It has 53K miles on it and is in otherwise good shape (pending me looking at it and PPIing it). He does have BBS rims on it and still has the Fuchs too. Unless he gets near $30,000 I think I will just get a 3.2 Carrera.

Wow I did a search in the Miami area and there are two REALLLLLLLLLL NICE 930s down there for about 30K. With stiff negotiating bet they could be had for 28-29K. God I wish I lived in Florida. I need someone to talk me into buying a car from a far away place. Has anyone ever done it here? It just scares the living hell out of me to plunk major Gs on a piece of machinery you cannot even touch before you see it. Maybe a nice Rennlister could check out one of em for me on a reconnaissance mission.

Car #1:

Car # 2 (my favorite):

You might need to copy and paste all of that.

It sucks to have what looks like great cars, but at a distance that isn't close enough to drive to. I flew from Charleston, SC to Memphis, TN to look at a car. I ended up buying it because it had some items that I wanted on it already.

Then I had to drive it home! That was a challenge, as I had a long trip to get to home in a new car and the interior was stuffed with extra parts, etc.

Good luck!

As I've said in response to your earlier threat on John's friend's car, I bought my 930 in Scottsdale and my M3 in Tampa. I live in Seattle. It can be done.

Thread, not threat.

I cna't remember--have you ever driven a 930? 'Cuz saying that you'll "just get a 3.2" if a certain 930 doesn't work out is like going out to dinner and trying to decide what steak to get, then deciding to get a salad.

Nothing wrong with a salad. In fact, it may be better for you. It just ain't anything like a steak.

Yeah Ive driven a 930. In many respects was a lot like my 951, albeit with a lot more push from the rear when cornering. Id say power was the same. Lets face it though. On looks, the 930 wins hands down. And if I ever wanted I could get the 930 easily over 400bhp with little effort. I could probably only max out the 951 at 350bhp or so without tearing the whole car apart. Id probably leave the 930 stock for a while IF I DID get one b/c its a larger investment than a 3.2.

Unless I can get in a 930 for 30K however, I think Im going to pass. I dont want to spend more than that right now and everyone tells me thats the target number for a very good deal. If a very good deal is not present - or one I would simply be a fool to pass up, Im perfectly happy adding a 3.2 for a few years and re-entertaiing the 930 thought at a later date.

I bought my current 944 turbo cabrio through a Rennlister 2 years ago in Switzerland while I was living in the Caribbean. I basically got him to a) find the car for me, b) check it out c) put me in touch with the seller, and d) pick it up after I wired the money to pay for it.

My family thought I was crazy, but the car was exactly what he said and better than I expected.

Although he asked for nothing in return, I was only too happy to give him a cash gift and take him to dinner when we met in Zürich to pick up the car. We've been friends ever since. Long-distance car shopping is one of the wonders of Rennlist.
