If it were a cheve truck I'd just replace the gas & oil, turn it over a fue times w the ignition disconected and then hope it starts.
However, a Porsche motor rebuild is over $10K so I'd do every thing I could to make sure it is healthy.
I am not an expert but if it were me, I'd pull the spark plugs and squirt some oil in each jug. I'd change the oil. Change out the battery. Might even pull the valve covers and squirt the cams with oil. Then I'd leave the spark plugs out turn it by hand first then crank the motor a bunch of times to get oil some oil presure through out the motor.
On the gas side it is likely that your CIS system is going to be a problem and migh be gumed up. I'd drain the gas tank and see if there is rust in it. If ok, replace the gas. Might even remove the gas return line form the cis head and turn on the fuel pumps and pump some of the new fuel in through the cis head and in to a bucket. Then I'd seal the system up and turn on the pumps again to see if there are any leaks.I think on 930's you have to unplug a switch on the head so the fuel pumps operate or push down the metering plate a bit so the electrical system thinks the motor is runing.
Now put every thing back to geather w new plugs and see if it will start.
Run it at 1200-1500 for a minite or so.
Don't forget the the brake system and trans fluid.
Then do a leak down; pull the motor and replace most of the rubber hoses & belts and the injector seals and re adjust the valves.
If you are luckey you wont have any major oil leaks.
Good luck...

I agree with Keith. A little preventive work done up front might save you thousands later. Maybe your uncle will let you do this BEFORE you buy it? Then you can decide what the car is worth based on this and other factors, i.e, condition of the interior and exterior, miles, etc. If you do all the work youself, you'll save a lot vs, taking it somewhere. Remember though, your buying a car that has sat for ten years w/o moving and these cars like to be driven, not parked, as seals, belts, hoses, bearings, etc. need to be oiled, greased, rotated to prevent drying out.
Good luck!

Thats a cool find, what color is it,interior, exterior. If it was the right color combination id buy it in a second. Were else are you going to find a 930 that has been untouched for 10 years. Thats cool, as long as all the above stuff mentioned checks out, and its a reasonable price, buy it. Heck even if it had some serious problems, id still buy it. I just like the idea of having an old car that hasnt been driven by a million people. Good luck

its is black, tan interior
my impluse will buy it in a second, my thoughts will hold me back
as long as the price is fair, I will do it
this guy is eccentric, I have to strike the deal right away when he says yes. otherwise he may change his mind, he doesn't need $ anyway.
there is always a reason why the car still in the garage
that why I need to find out all info as much as possible, bring a mechanic in at this stage may ruin it for now
when I ask I may get it for real cheap or he will ask for a unreasonable high price
what is the going price for a '79 930 ?? I think $10k below a good condition car will be fair, what do you think?

Good condition cars like that around here have been advertised recently in the low 20's. If you get it running, be very careful about driving it. The rubber in the brake system is probably shot.

My 84 930 was a similar story. My dad bought it new (imported). He never drove it because lets face it it is not the most comfortable car. It only got driven a couple of times a year and it was abused because my sisters or cousines would take it out just to mess around in a porsche. I remember once my cousines was braging about hitting like 45 mph out of our driveway. I used to abuse it a bit to before I knew anything. Anyways the car was a maintenance night mare. Ity seams like every trip it took It required 2k in repairs. Untill finaly it requred a top end rebuild. This in a car that only had 16k miles on it. Anyways the car is now in my loving hands and is very reliable. Always gets warmed up ect. The point of my long winded story is. I think the car had so many problems in its previous life because it was hardly ever driven. This coupled with the fact that when it was driven it was abused. Your car could and probably does require some costly updates. On a happier note my car now has 24k miles on it and is much happier now that it is loved and cared for. Sometimes I appologize to it for my previous abuse!!
