Default Trying to make a 930 as light weight as possible

Hello everyone, I am trying to make my 930 as light as possible, and I am planning to do the following:

Delete the sunroof;
Remove A/C, stereo and all carpet;
Replace door, hood, trunk lid, fender, bumpers, and door cards to carbonfibre;
Convert electric window to manual;
Change door lock to strap;
Replace glass to plastic;
Remove the rear seat and replace front seats to racing shell.

My goal is to keep the car's outlook as original with the lightest parts, please kindly advice where should I find the right parts with best quality. Please also give me some idea if there are any other things I can make the car even lighter, Thank you very much!

Don Windy (Metro NY PCA instructor who signed me off to permanent solo in DE) has an 86 930 that he turned into a lightweight fire breathing rocket. I think part of the sign off process was a ride along at Summit Point and as long as I didn't pee my pants I was good. I remember seeing the needle between 165-170 right before turn one. It may not always be smooth and pretty but that car can stay with any GT3.

That was a fun ride.

I start leaking in the ol' pants at anything over 130. Probably 'cause my suspension isn't as nice as it could be and the county roads here are equally not as nice. Never done the track thing, though.

Might look in to the glass replacement though depending on where it is driven , or what track and associations you might run with. There might be some sticky rules on this .

Not sure of HP but it sounded/felt like pushing 400. Weight wise another guess less than 2500.

My E car weighs 2500 and change without me so I may be over. His car had a lot of fiberglass on it.

I'd add wheels to the list.

Light is great, but don't forget about safety. Whether you drive on the street or track, you should maintain some level of side protection. If you put in CF doors, you should consider adding a cage with side bars, which will add back some weight. And I'd leave the windshield as glass -- plastic windshields are too hard to maintain and see through no matter how you drive your car.

One place where you can save a bunch of weight is in the exhaust system -- get a high quality set of stainless headers with no heat exchangers and a lighter weight muffler. But if you tweak the engine, you should consider a much larger intercooler and one or more front oil coolers -- which add significant weight back into the car. Though you can certainly make great strides in reducing weight, you sort of chase your tail a bit sometimes. And it's always that last 100 lbs that's most difficult -- and costly - to shed.

Ti-headers are even lighter !

First;

Remove Radio and all related wiring
Remove wipers & motor and all related wiring
Remove rear wiper and all related wiring
Remove AC system - big weight drop ! ! !
Remove power window motors and relpace with rally pull straps
Remove power locks
Remove sunroof - weight up high !
Remove sideview mirrors
Remove gauges
Remove headlight squirters
Remove fog lights and all wiring
Remove OE fuel tank

Second;

Strip complete tub to bare metal
Apply only one coat of etch primer
Apply only one coat single stage paint
(these three steps save up to 20 lbs.)

Install;

Carbon Seats
Carbon hood
Carbon bumber covers
Carbon fenders
Carbon rockers
Carbon decklid & tail
Carbon roof panel
Carbon doors
Carbon Ceramic Brakes = critical unsprung 40lbs saved
Carbon wheels - big weight drop - also critical unsprung weight ! ! !

Then install;

'73 RS plastic fuel tank
Motec dash with all options
Titanium seat rails
Titanium fasteners & brackets
Light weight oil lines
Titanium headers & pipes
Light weight glass windshield
Lexan in all other windows
Plastic exterior door handles (911R)
Driver side '75 only Turbo mirror (which is really from a '73 911)
Light weight shifter and linkage
Drill (put holes in) everything that is not safety related

Lastly;

Go on a diet and lose 20 lbs.

Carbon fiber & Titanium everywhere should do the trick .......... it's ONLY money !

Uh, yeah, you *could* do all that stuff. It would be quite light and very unique. But I bet you'd have $250K in your car before you were done, and it would be worth maybe $70k if you could find that rare person who has similar tastes. You'd be better off taking the money and putting it in a factory race car that's already light and has a built-in market.

As I said, I'd get some stainless headers and go from there!

I run a 930 at the track. It weighs in at 2340lbs. I'm sure I can still drop some more weight but for now its perfect. It's amusing when other PCA guys tell me a 930 isn't a good track car since its too heavy.
