Default Porsche 930 Turbo - Speed Yellow - Project Begins............

Hi All,

Thought given I am dealing with a healthy dose of "man flu" this weekend I would use the time to start a thread on my 930 Turbo which I bought earlier this year. The car has had some mods so please don't pick on the car because of this. It was originally white with white fuchs and a blue interior..............

86 Turbo, 58k miles I am the 8th owner. The 5th & 6th owners owned it for 16 years between them. Here is some info on the car that I found in the history file from a magazine article when it was for sale back in late 2004. The car was advertised for £16,995 with the following description; “speed yellow with full dark leather interior showing 50k miles, sports seats, sunroof, 17 inch OZ wheels, been in storage for last 4 years, lots of bills, in lovely condition, many mods including 5 speed box etc……”

- GT Purely Porsche also featured the car in its Sept 2004 issue in the “How about” section. The article was called “How about A………………Turbo?” – the feature was on three 911 turbos for sale at Northway at the time. This 930, a 964 T2 and a LHD 993 T (Ray Northways own car at the time). In reference to the 930 the article broke down as follows;

1986 911 Turbo – Whats it like?

- This car’s had things done to it, but that doesn’t detract from the appeal because all the mods have a beneficial result. Like the fact that it was originally white instead of this vibrant yellow, and the archaic, unreliable and horribly sloppy 915 four-speed gearbox had been switched for a later G50 version with hydraulic clutch (involving a complex re-jig of the suspension carrier). The reasonably new Oz alloy wheels look good as well

Whats it like to drive?

- The five gears make the lag less noticeable, but theres no getting away from the steering feeling heavy and you need both feet to stop it. Of course the interior looks antiquated, but some may see this as part of its charm

Why should you buy this car?

As an entry to Turbo ownership you could do a lot worse and the Speed Yellow paint has been applied very well indeed. There’s a whole wad of bills in an A4 binder too if you are short of bedtime reading. If you like the impact bumper looks and want a 911 Turbo for the price of a Focus, go for it

NB: Interesting to see the asking prices back in late 2004 of £24,995 for the 964 T2 (assume that’s the 3.6ltr?) and the 993 Turbo @ £35k ..............prices have definitely moved on that's for sure

The 7th owner purchased it in Dec 2012 as a base for a 935 project. However, on the way out to see one of his other 911s for sale a car in the lane to his left moved across and ran into the left front wing (see pic below). I saw the ad for the car on pistonheads at work one Friday afternoon and given I lived 3miles away thought it was rude not to go and have a look. So I called and confirmed it was still available and one thing led to another..........................I trailered the car to my body shop guy (he did the work on my 964). Estimates are about £2.5k to fix the car (including full front blow in and check chassis on jig etc) and I had to source a new wing which I ended up having to buy new from the OPC as I couldn't find anything decent second hand. Work is expected to begin this week so I will make sure I keep this thread updated on progress. Should be finished by July I would have thought. Plan after that is to paintshield the front to stop it getting stone chipped, get it serviced at my Porsche specialist. I will then run it for a year and decide whether to do the stage 1 mods or not (see other thread I started)

Here are some pics from Dec 2012 ( before the incident) and one from a car show in 2011.

Car as it currently stands at the body shop.............

Oh and this also compliments my other aircooled machine a 1990 Guards Red 964 C2 Manual Coupe which I have had for over 3 years now. I included a gratuitous pic of that below

Actually it looks pretty good in yellow, and you don't see that color in a 930 too often. But for the body damage, of course!

I noticed in the descriptions that they listed the original transmission as "unreliable and horribly sloppy 915 four-speed gearbox". That is not correct; the 930 (911 turbos) came with a 930 gearbox specific to the bread. 915's are on normally aspirated 911's.

You mentioned that the car was white/blue origionaly, was the interior changed or dyed? If the latter are you going to re-do at some point? Great project good luck with it and keep us up dated.

Thanks six gun. Yes will do. I am 99.9% sure that its a new interior and not dyed. I will check though.

Slowly. My body shop is a two man band and due to other cars ahead of me, annual leave, my 964 needing some minor work ahead of this things have been quiet. Will update when it all kicks off and am heading up to have a word next sat.

so parts list is ready. Will order from OPC tommorrow. Need a new front bumper but will source that second hand as there seem to be a few on ebay etc for £50-75.......new from OPC.........£750!!!!! haha.........I dont think so. Rest of parts were pretty reasonable. Existing bonnet was fine and could be saved

Just thought I would update this thread to say the car is now finished and I have finally got it back on the drive and am enjoying some aircooled turbo fun. Car passed its mot just needing new wiper blades. I put 4 new boots on it. Then had the car serviced and lowered. So far I have found the car great to drive and love the character. Some final pics

Nice looking 930. Congrats on finishing. Reminds me of a "fly yellow" '89 I looked at a few years back.

Yes, 930 = great to drive and special character all its own!
