Post K27 Turbo Class 101

I have taken some time to post some pictures of the K27 family of turbochargers and popular hybrids. I take it for granted with seeing many of these on a frequent bases that many have not seen the differences.

From left to right is:

KKK K27-7006 Stock, New

Garrett TB405 Modified/Near New
Part# 465981-2 Made in Japan for Race Supra's
Must be modified to survive in the Porsche world..

My old favorite- Garrett TS04 fitted with a 60-78mm compressor wheel. Very flexible in configuration, large 8mm shaft. Heavy & Large, must also be modified internally to live.

K28-K29 Modified turbocharger, When coupled with a K27-7006 hot side and center section this unit can perform. However, it is very large and heavy, and has the oldest compressor technology in the bunch, not efficient compared to the other units...

Attached is another picture that show the backside of the compressor housings. I have also included a completed TS04 in the background, this unit has a 72mm compressor wheel vs the 66mm housing next to it. The TB405 comes stock with the classic 60-1 wheel which measures close to 58mm (not a true 60)

Yes, I haven't included the center sections, or turbine housings. I'll tackle it later

Kevin,

Nice, artistic and informative. I guess the smallest baby of the group would be the factory KKK-3LDZ stock followed by the K27-7200 which would have a smaller cold side housing than the K27-7006. Would the Garrett TB4129 fall between the K27-7200 and the K27-7006? Even though these units hail from different origins ... it is my understanding that you can rebuild and improve each of these with stronger shafts, better bearings and machine the cases to accomodate larger compressor wheels so that they will perform better. I don't know if this is to broad a question to answer but here it is anyway: What is the average life expectancy [street vs. race]of a turbo used on our 930's and which units hold up the best. And, do rebuilt turbos have the same life expectancy as new ones?

Garrick;

The K27-7200 has a 2mm smaller diameter turbine wheel. The Garrett TV4129 is very similar to the TB405. In a stock non-modified condition the Garrett turbochargers have larger compressor wheels from the get go. I will provide the inducer measurements, this is the portion of the compressor wheel that we actually see. The major is the overall diameter.

Inducer measurements/Major measurements

Stock 3LDZ
Soon

K27-7200
Soon

K27-7006
2.0820/2.990

TV4129

TB405

K27-K29 Hybrid

High Efficient K27-7200-7006 Hybrid

I'll edit the 3LDZ & K27-7200 numbers in a second
