Porsche 934
Hi gang,
I was reading up on the 934 and it mentioned that the 934's engine was essentially that of the 930's. More rugged pistons were fitted to give greater durability at higher revs. Crankcase, crankshaft, conrods and cylinder barrels were identical to the production turbo engine, Type 930/75. The inlet and exhaust ports were modified and however the 934 used a much larger KKK turbocahrger than the 930. Porsche's engineers modified the air unit which was drawn through the metering unit at the rear of the engine bay to pass twice as much air as the production 930, and added a spun alloy cone that smoothed out the airflow past the metering disc. This gave a power output of 485bhp at 7000rpm at 1.4 bar boost and 434 lb/ft of torque at 5400rpm.
My question is, which turbocharger did the 934 use? I doubt it was the KKK29 and can the metering unit in our 930's be modified to that of the 934?

Sameer,
Porsche part number 911 123 015 00 if that helps. I've got a copy of the 934 parts diagrams if you want to borrow it (assuming you live in the US, too hard to send mail elsewhere).

But that is such an old motor. They've learned so much about how to build a hot turbo motor over the last 25 years. If you try to reproduce that old motor too closely, you may come up with something substandard by today's specs.

Learned and forgotton in some cases. If you are sticking with CIS the 934 is the top of the game. It produced upwards of 550hp, much more than our normal CIS can obtain and it was on a mostly stock motor. Guess where the aftermarket header designs came from?

Guys,
Thanks for the info. From what I have gathered from PowerHaus,
"The air metering units were essentially the same as production 930 units, albeit polished to improve flow, and with the spun aluminum cone on the air flapper plate. The turbo was a K33, and later a K36 unit -- no power until 5000rpm, then everything at once".
