Default Headlights

I am looking into buying a MY 86 911 turbo and have noticed that some cars have the more "upright" headlight placement and others have the MY 87 and on more "flush" style.

Was the design changed at some point in the production year or is this simply a mod? If it is a mod, is it easy to do?

Thanks.

I think you might just be seeing the difference between the Euro H4's vs. the us spec. lights. That is if you are talking about the '76-'89 930 bodies.

The '86 and earlier USA cars had the upright "sugar scoop" headlights with generic DOT spec sealed beam headlights.

From '87 on they used a slanted back semi flush sealed beam headlight with replaceable H5 halogen bulbs that look similar to the european Porsche H4 headlight assembly on the outside.
The reflector and lense fluting in the H5 sends out an unfocused beam of light like all DOT spec sealed beams from 25 years ago.

Thanks for the replies. What is involved in converting the 86 sugar scoops to the 87-89 style. Also what is involved on reverting back to sugar scoops?

Default HID lights

So to go to HID lights do you need to change the lenses? Meaning going from H5 to H4 or something else. I want to go to HID lights although I am confused as to what I need to do on lenses...help needed?? Thanks

It is all plug and play with Bosch Euro H4s. You will need to remove the sealed beam housing, but that is only 3 or 4 screws. When you order your H4s, you can get either chrome rings or black rings. There is also an outer paintable ring that you can buy to match the color of the car.

Done it with Euro H4s and won't do it again. The light is bright, but it scatters due to the H4 fluting. Have you seen 4Runners/Tacomas/Titans/Frontiers/Pathfinders with really bright lights coming at you? That's the same thing you're doing. You can get some projectors for the car from DZug and it shouldn't scatter the light. http://www.d-zug.us/hidupgrade.htm
