Question 930 Slant Nose

I have always wanted a slant nose turbo , and I have an opportunity to purchase one and i need a little guidance. The car is a 1989 930S slant with 22k, cashmere leather etc. Only mods are waste gate spring and exhaust. What is a fair market price for this car on the East Coast? How many of these cars were built? What are the major trouble spots on these cars that I should look for? Any other tips or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick

I have an 88 930S that I bought three years ago with 26,000 miles... pristine inside and out... upgraded turbo, intercooler, additional injector, B&B exhaust, and recently barrier hoses and procooler receiver/dryer to upgrade the AC. These cars are pretty much bullet proof but they are more expensive to fix than 911s. Check the waste gate spring...from your post it sounds as if it was upgraded but you don't say whether it is a 1.0 or 1.2 or ?? spring. Using a more agressive spring without upgrading the intercooler fuel is asking for trouble. Have the car checked out by a reliable shop... cost $200+/-. The one main change from the 88 to 89 was the five spped trans that your car has. Take a look at the latest issue of Excellence for a rather lengthy article on 930s. Good luck... you'll love it!!

I own an 88 930S Cabriolet. Cabs are anywhere between 35-50K, coupes about 5K less. sounds like you found a nice one--make sure it is documented that it is a factory 930S before you pay!!

I am not sure about the upgrade on the spring, but I will check it out. I plan to have a shop take a look at the car, but he seems to be fixed on a price of 55k. That seems really high to me. The new issue of excellence puts it at 46 to 50k even with the low mileage. The car is in great shape, but it hasn't been kept in a bubble... there is evidence of use, so i wouldn't call it "above excellent"as Anderson likes to call cars that are perfect. I'll let you know how it works out, but does 55k seem a little silly?

I PURCHASED AN 88 FACTORY SLANT IN 98 FOR AROUND 40K. AT THE TIME IT HAD 33,000 MILES. THE ONLY UPGRADE WAS THE EXHAUST. THE CAR WAS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. I THINK THAT 55K IS A LITTLE STRONG. I AGREE ABOUT MAKING SURE IT IS A FACTORY CAR. GOOD LUCK WITH IT. I'M SURE YOU WILL ENJOY IT IF YOU GET IT.

$55k is ridiculously high. what do you want the car for? to drive it or concours it? if you want one to drive, go for one with slightly higher mileage. you'll not only save on the purchase price, but also on maintenance; ones that sit around haven't had a lot of typical R&R done yet, but once they're driven a little, all kinds of **** will start breaking due to age and lack of use. these cars were made to be driven.

I plan to drive the car as a weekend toy. I like a clean car but concours stuff just seems to fussy for me. I think I'll keep looking for a car with a little higher mileage and a lower price. Thanks for all the input!

Don't forget, there is a substantial difference between 89's and prior 930's because of the G50-50 5 speed. The premium for standard 930's seems to be $7-$10k for 89's. Also, I don't recall what the "S" differences were on 930's, but that may affect the value considerably too.

I know a guy in LA that had a "standard" (86-88) black slope he wanted 40-something for. Not a collector like that 89 S, but probably a fine driver.

Here is the best advice you will get.

Ask around for the best Porsche mechanic and have him look at the car.
You will get an expert opinion and that is what you need.

Sameer,

Mine has Porsche Vin #'s. It was brought to RUF when brand new in 1985 and converted to BTR spec. I have installed GHL headers, and had a GHL mufler which has since then been gutted. Also have an MSD ignition. I have not done any other mods since I would like to keep it as close as possible to "stock". I may try a Garrett turbo if the turbo ever goes out, but I would have the old one rebuild and put it back on if and when I sell the car.

Erik,
Are you using 5 or 6 speed tranny? How about your fueling? Bosch Motronic, Motec? Care to post pics of your engine bay.

Rick,

After researching the Porsche 911 "Red Book", P. Paternie, it appears that no factory 1989 930S cars were produced. The only production cars were '87 (261 US) and '88 (1773 NA) models with a very few special order factory conversions done on '84 (34), '85 (44), and '86 (52). The book could be incorrect as some special order conversions may have been done. Look for option code M505 US or M506 RoW on the Vehicle ID Label as these would indicate a factory slant nose option.

Good Luck,

Brad
