5 or 6 speed
Can I swap out my transmission for a 993 or 996 gearbox, any one done this, any major mods?? I figure a close ratio box would be nice and a 996 box would be cheap because there are a lot of wrecked 996's.

While I don't claim to have grru status as to the technical benifits of of both the 4 and 5 speed trannies, I have owned both ( 78-86 and an 89 930's) I perfer the 4 speed over the 5 in all instances except road trips.
So I guess you have your own reasons for wanting to change, but consider the loss of origionailty as a $ loss when it comes time for sale.

You can swap in any of the G50's, patrick motorsports offers conversions, the conversion is not inexpensive. Having owned two 79's one with stock 4 speed and one with a G50, I would not spend $10-12K for the conversion myself. Also as sixgun alludes to the turbo's are getting quite valuable and any deviations from originality will cost you if you sell. Now if car is already modded what the hey, it's only money

The 993 G50/20 will fit with modifications (short bellhousing). Also, the 993 6-speed does not have a speedometer sensor, this also has to be modified. And then you need the complete hydraulic system, pedal cluster, reservoir, tubing, etc, etc. Patric Motorsport has a complete kit for $16k, not exactly cheap.
The 996 gearbox will not fit, and can not be modified to fit either. The flange towards the engine is completely different. and the starter motor sits on the engine side and not on the gear box like the G50's, 915' and 930 boxes.

I'm in the market for a pristine '89 930 coupe if anyone has a line on one. I had an '88 930 cab back then and was not a fan of the four speed (even though you could drop it into 2nd gear at 80 mph and light the afterburners).

I recently purchased a 84 euro 930 that had a bad 4 speed figured I was throwing good money away fixing it and did the G50 swap. Car is otherwise stock with the exception of an exhaust. Now that its done I don't think I would want to have the car any other way! It seems to shift better between gears, acclerates faster, and boost is always available

The GETRAG G50.50 5-speed limited-slip transmission was standard equipment on the 1989 930. I have a 1989 930 w/ 17,805 miles and the original MSRP window sticker listing the G50.50 with limited-slip as standard equipment. The G50.50 is a physically longer transmission than ths 4-speed and the 930 body was modified in 1989 for the G50.50.
