Default CIS Modifications

After speaking with several different people in my area that have EFI cars I have decided that I don't really want to go down that route when it comes to upgrades. Everyone has warned me that it can be difficult to get the cars tuned properly.

A bit about my car.

120,000 miles, k-27 7200, fabspeed muffler
I also just had the 4spd trans completly rebuild and it has made a huge difference

This is going to be a street car and I may take it to a few DE events per year and to the drag strip a few times. I'm looking at making bottem end power and reducing the turbo lag as much as possible. I never really shift above 6000rpm.
Reliability is the main concern with me using it as my dialy driver in the summer.

I would like to have 375-400hp at the wheels. I would like some input as to what the best upgrades would be, so far I have these things in mind.

Mahle pistons and cylinders 7.5:1 compression
Fabspeed Headers
Fabspeed IC
Cams ?
Other upgrades ?

I'm wondering what other upgrades would be required to get me to this 375-400hp goal?

I'm in the same boat as you... Just brought an 87 930 ... similar upgrades. ...

B&B exhaust system
K27 7200 turbo
Larger IC
larger spring

The car dynoed 306 RWHP

I just brought 964 cams and I too am thinking about an EFI or ITB system

I have an 87 930 with CIS. I dyno'ed a few years ago at 397 RWHP, which is along the lines of what you are looking at. I still want more though, so I am pondering EFI. Lets see if I can list what mods I have. I bet I miss some.

3.4L Mahle P/C
Euro fuel system
B&B headers with heat exchangers
B&B long neck intercooler
Aftermarket air cleaner, I forget the brand
K27HF turbo
Tial Wastgate with 1 bar spring
SC cams

The car works fine with no detonation or fuel starvation, but boy is it rich down low and in the midrange. I am getting it would be much crisper with EFI. Also, I think I am one of the lucky ones; others have had problem with not enough fuel for this power on CIS.

They were on the car when I got it, so I can't give a before and after comparison.

based on experience, you will be lucky to accomplish both goals with CIS: low end / no lag and 400 RWP. To get the safe fuel ratio's up high they usually run pretty sluggish down low, and headers dont help either. Depending on were you live the tuning is not such a big deal if you use a common ECU. Pick a reputable tuner and do the EFI. In the long run, its cheaper and safer for the motor if you do it right. My car runs so much better post EFI. Low end and upper ranges its smooth as butter, and the A/F ratio's are perfect for the entire range. Just my two cents (but I would admit to blowing $20,000 figuring it out )

Curious, I was under the impression the K27HF turbo was better suited to 964 cams and that SC cams were better off with K27S. The Leask WUR setup would help your fuel issues a bit. No, it's not EFI but a whole lot less expensive and a definite improvement.

400WHP quick spool with CIS requires some tuning and the right combination of parts. You can achieve 1bar boost @ 2600rpm and 21mpg on the highway.
The formula I use is:
> equal length tuned headers
> custom cams
> K27HFS
> straight through muffler
> large intercooler w/ 1bar boost
> modified fuel head and WUR
> custom distributor curve
No internal engine modifications are necessary. Tuning the fuel and ignition systems are critical to optimizing power, mileage, early boost and driveability.

I use a custom grind that is between an SC and 964. Works nice with both K27-7200 and K27HF/HFS.
