I am considering buying a 1979 930 that is in Houston (I am in the San Francisco Bay Area). Can anyone recommend a mechanic in Houston who really knows 930s and can do a PPI? Thanks!

Protechnik used to be the place to go in the houston area. I am not sure anymore though.

Best bet is to check the local forums at pelican parts
