Default wanted 1989 Turbo

Looking for my first Porsche. Like the 930's and like the G50 transmission. I want a weekend driver so something setup for track would not be suitable.

G,day
G50 wont cut the mustard in a 930, you,ll probably rip it apart somewhere at some point.
A more suitalble turbo box is the G50/50 or a RUF 5 speed box, which is what I'm looking for.
Regards,
Nik...

G Day RUFCAR,

The G50/50 is what I'm looking for. Thanks for the advice!

Sorry to disagree, but a G50 would most certainly "cut the mustard" for a 930, especially for a 930 anywhere close to stock. There are many 930s out there that have successfully done this conversion (one of which is mine). I get 500+ hp to the wheels at 1.0 bar on my '78 930, which these days I realize is chicken feed , but relevant to this topic. No problem whatsoever with this tranny, street or track. Put in a good Wevo G50 short shift kit in there, and you'd be good to go.

Talk to Patrick Motorsports about options involving a pre-89 930 conversion. You can get a G50/50, but they are very spendy. And even a good G50 conversion itself ain't cheap, either. But trying to find a good condition 89 930 may be the most expensive option of all.

My last 88 had a G50. Engine was 3.5 twin plug, ball bearing turbo, huge intercooler, Motec etc. Could chirp tires hitting third. NO ISSUES with the G50 five speed.

The G50/50 has a stonger mainshaft and larger ring and pinion. However, the gears and syncros are interchangable between the G50/01/02 and the /50. IF you dump the clutch, you will break the mainshaft of the /01/02 easier than the /50.

Read up on the RUF 5-speed and you'll surely learn (as I did) that a G50 is a better solution while a G50/50 better still. You may be able to find a 1989 930 for the right price -- meaning within $10k of earlier 4-speed 930's and you come out ahead with the 5-speed.

The $10k price difference between an '89 and older models is a good one but you must make sure that the two cars are mechanically equal. If you get the 5 spd but have to rebuild the engine then you are not ahead. Unless you can do a lot of the work yourself it is not recommended that you pay to convert to a 5 spd. There have been many posts on this forum where costs climbed higher than forcast by the installing company. Plus, IMHO, if you spent $10k on an older model to upgrade to a 5 spd, you would not get the money back when you sell the car.

Not to be argumentative, but please do tell what performance modifications anyone does with expectation of getting their $ back? Surely the vast majority of us here don't base our modification decisions on the resale value of our precious 930's. Me thinks it's about the passion of ownership.
Personally speaking, I'm in the pro-5 speed camp - being convinced it's a worthy upgrade ... albeit for those with the available disposal income.

I paid $33xxx for my 87 with G50/50, k-27 ,powerhaus headers w/heat,borla exhaust and garretson intercooler. I think finding a car set up how you like it is a plus especially if someone did all the work for you. Oh and my car had 47,xxx miles and is in great shape inside and out. I don`t think you get back what you put into the car ever.......

I agree that you never get your money back from any mods. The point I was making was that there are OEM cars with that particular feature. In this market it would be far easier to find an '89 for a good price than it would to buy a car and then put it out of commision for months and spend a big hunk of cash that would probablly cost more than the '89. I was talking about someone who was looking for a car to buy not who has a car already. As far as mods to any Pcar, you always lose money on them and I agree with the passion part.

Get your money back, hohoho, 930s are for gear heads what Vegas is for a gambling addict. I paid for the G50/50 tricked out tranny from Patrick Motorsports and imho it really is worth it if you like to race sportbikes on the highway but it is not necessary with the power Bruce and I are putting down.
