Default 930 vs. 965

Gentlemen,

I've always been drawn to the 911 turbo. The wide azz and big tail have always said I'm a car to be reckoned with. There has been a rash of great looking 965's to hit the market. I'd love to get into one. I don't need a laundry list of differences between the two. Actually, I wouldn't care I might learn something new.
My comparison is more maintenance than anything else. Someone told me to stay away from the 964 series. They were always a "problem" and that I would be alot smarter to get a 993. I'd love a 993tt but price prohibits. So, if I were to "move up" to a 965 from a 930 (sorry, to the 930 purists) should I really expect higher regular maintenance costs? The one specific example was valve adjustments and the frequency at which they need proper adjusting - the 965 and 930 are the same - so, that means little to me. Is there anything else about one of these "problem" cars I'd need to know about?
Thanks in advance (sorry, I had to)

I hate to be the one to tell you this, b/c I hate when ppl tell me, but...

this has been hashed and re-hashed again and again. You really can find a ton of info with a search.

Good luck.

WPOZZZ,

What about the 930 makes you prefer it over your 965?

My advice has always been buy the newest you can afford. The 965 has a better climate system, suspension and on a stock car a better motor IE turbo, intercooler, digital ignition etc. I have owned everything from a 79 turbo to a 08 turbo and now back in the 965. I love it. Even after the 997TT I really enjoy the car, not near as raw as my past 930s but enough to make me smile yet civil enough to drive daily. Keep in mind that my opinion comes from using these cars as a daily driver not a weekend warrior which presents a whole another aspect to driving/owning these cars.

I didn't realize the 965 had a digital ignition, in what year did they change from CIS?

I love my 965. More "feel" than my 993TT.

I really like the rawness of the 930. It has no power steering or hydraulic clutch. the road feel is awesome and being able to control that "widowmaker" brings a smile to my face everytime I drive it! Unfortunately, I haven't driven it in 6 months as my motor is apart for a rebuild.

The 965 is a great car, but the power steering feels heavy and I still have a hard time getting used to the 5 speed as I'm hunting for what gear to be in. I can loaf in 5th gear at 40 mph, gas it and then remember I need to downshift. However, the 5 speed is great for highway cruising!

The 965 is a wonderful car for a night on the town, which is what I use it for. The 930 is great for driving, especially with my mods. The boost is intoxicating! The best thing about the 930 is none of my female friends want to drive it as they have difficulty in manipulating the clutch. Of course, I never tell them the 965 is driver friendly. lol

This is the kind of feedback I'm looking for.

I grew up around corvettes. My dad always had older ('65, '66, & '67) vettes and my mom had newer ('74, '78, '81, '84, '02, & '08) vettes. To ride in them my mom's were fun but to "get a ride" in one my dad's were a blast!

To be honest, I really like the road feel of the 930. The 965's power steering seems to dampen that sensation. It is really interesting when guys talk about iterations of the 911 turbo and say the 965 is more raw than the 993tt and the 993tt is more raw than the 996tt. I've had a 996 Carrera and that car was more like an appliance. It was dependable with lots of power and surgical handling, but something was missing. The 996 was way too easy to drive. The same goes for the iterations following the 930.

Maybe I'm too old school, but I love being able to master the 930 that is devoid of ABS and other electronic aids. The new turbos are so easy, a caveman could drive it.

If only the 964 manual racks weren't so damn expensive.

The CIS was still present, 94 was the last year( the turbo was the only CIS car present in 94) but the ignition was a hybrid off of 3.2 and the 928. It used a 3 tooth reference system off of the flywheel.

As every one says, depends on what you want. I have not owned a 965, but my neighbor does. I find it more civilized than my 930's and better AC. The 930's are lighter and more raw. They all are quick in the proper hands. I feel there is more potential in the 965, but the is MO.

The great thing about this "dilemma" is that the final 3 iterations of air cooled turbos offer a great spectrum of driver involvement. You can choose the level of feel and/or comfort that suits you best. My sweet spot on the spectrum is somewhere between 930 and 965, and I currently have the latter. To me it's the best compromise.

i like the 930 much better than the 965. to me the 965 is too much of a comprmise between the 993tt and the 930, which is why i went for a 930 instead. That being said i still ove my 993tt
