Default Stock 85 930 looking for simple power increase

Hello, I have a stock 85 930 with 14K miles which I have owned for 15 years. I am looking for alittle more power( car doesnt impress me anymore). I was thinking about a GHL header and muffler with a 1 bar spring. Any thoughts?? Any idea of the power increase I will realize. Also any cold air intakes recommended?? I want to try to aviod any modifications which are not fully reversable (this car is concours winning example) Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide. Information is priceless!!

That's a very good start, but it puts you on that slippery slope! My suggestion is to keep the car as is and get a souped up turbo to go along with it. I have both and the stock 79 just sits in the garage nowdays, relegated to concours duty. While the highly modded 86 gets driven on a weekly basis. it is just alot more fun to drive than the 79.

Don't fit a 1bar spring with either the stock turbo or the stock IC. You need to either fit a K27 turbo or a better IC.
Of course, I bought both...

What is the reasoning behind not using the 1 bar spring without the IC or turbo. The car wont be tracked and when I "stand on it" it will only be short bursts (30-80mph). I guess I should say I understand the reasoning. I thought Porsche built things conservatively, and antoher .2 bar wouldnt be overdoing it. Thanks for your input!!!

a friend of mine has an '87 930 that was totally stock except for a 1 bar spring and a removed catalytic converter for years.
it caused no problems and it didn't go over .9 bar with it anyway.

unless you're tracking the car and you're at full throttle for extended periods while using pump gas there's no problem using a 1 bar spring in your car.

what you read above was just more internet hearsay.

As long as the CO(AFRs) are correct 1 bar poses no problems.

I've been running 1.0 bar on my '87 and...like Nathan and so many of us looking for a "safe" level of additional adrenalin...I also installed a larger intercooler and a K27 turbo. Minus the cat and with a Fabspeed muffler, I have no problems achieving and maintaining 1.0 bar boost. I don't track the car, and it sees that level of boost for only as long as it takes to run through the gears and before the road or traffic gets too scarey to justify puting others at risk. My AFR's seem in line, but then that's with an old narrow band sensor...which is why I will sooner or later do the LM-1 installation for peace of mind and fine tuning.

Mark: I bought an LM-1 reader and the attachments when I first got my 930 and have never used it....If you're looking for one, it has the sensor, wire extensions, and hand held readout as a complete kit. I've never even hooked it up and don't think I'll be doing it...I decided the indy's are more adept at all this than I am.

several months ago, I was hanigng out at IA with Stephen and Karl talking about more power.

Karl looked at me and said "you want 25 more horsepower for free?" Sure man I'm in, I said.

He nodded to the office next door and said "see that treadmill boy?"

Mass is the enemy.

I honestly would not go to the trouble of having your waste-gate dismantled to fit a bigger spring, you will get far better control of your boost with a manual boost controller, and it is fitted or removed in about 2 minutes, cheap, simple and will hold boost better than relying on the waste-gate spring. Buy the best one you can get your hands on.
When it's fitted you can then choose any boost level you desire, as already mentioned you really need to get your AFR's checked to ensure that it is not going lean, and stick to a maximum of 1.0bar

All you need to fit it is a knife and two hose clips, a child could do it! And you won't have the hassle of removing and dismantling an old waste-gate.

Thanks for the links. I didnt realize the boost controllers were that simple and unintrusive. I really didnt want to alter the car that much because of its original concours condition (yes I know, I want my cake and eat it too!!). The under hood manual controller looks like the answer (easy to take off, without having to fool with the wastegate. Does anyone have any idea how much power I will gain from the boost increase and the header/muffler improvements?? Thanks again for everyone sharing there hard earned experience!!!

Also what kind of cold air intakes are available? Are they worth it? or should I just throw in a K&N filter?

Blown Daytona--> Here's a dyno graph with Fabspeed's 911T-930 equipped with our Air Intake System and a muffler bypass pipe.

Check out this video of our Turbo with the air intake and Zork tube installed.
http://www.vimeo.com/1225363

We also have headers with heat/without heat available which are direct replacements for the stock setup and improve turbo boost and low RPM's.

P.M or email Joey@fabspeed.com if you would like more information regarding Fabspeed's products for your 930T.

If you change the turbo for a K27HFS, the headers for one of the aftermarket ones like the Fabspeed above or any B&B style one, change the muffler for the Fabspeed one or even a zork, and airbox. Then get your fuel right with either the Leask adjustable unit or the digi WUR and run 1.0bar of boost you will be around the 400fwbhp mark. Just 1.0bar will give you something like 30bhp over stock i think, it might be a little more though?
