All Porsche'd out
Probably the blind leading the blind but I want to get some advise. After owning several Porsches, buying, repairing, selling, brokering, racing etc. Is it possible to get Porsched out? More precisely after finally getting my dream car a 81-911 turbo and finding out how truly awesome and unique the vehicle is... ( Euro spec'd motor, Endurance Racing dual-out aluminum see-through "muffler", Ruf 17" Speedlines" it makes me tired.
I have surprised and embarrased new Ferrari's, Boxters, flatnosed 930's, tuned 993s, Skylines GTRs and many more lesser cars and super bikes. Owners of ultra-exotic machinery rarely use their cars with the reckless abandonment required to get-way muchless catch or pass me. Living in Tokyo I use the train mostly so gas prices really dont bother me, but the brutal traffic does, and I find my car too much work for city driving compared to my tuned 951, which was so docile in the city, but not much less than a guided missle on the highway. What can I do to fall in love with my 930 turbo?
Does anyone use their cars daily?
All my friends say I should sell it since I could almost double my money. But whatelse can I get that will do the same??
It must be turbo charged. Must be a Porsche.

993 turbo too expensive!!
Help??

I drive my car every day and it is the only running vehicle that I own. Everyone thinks I am nuts to do so but I really enjoy it, my philosophy is that you are never guaranteed to see the next sunset so I try not save anything for later.
I think to fall in love with your car all over again you should drive something new on occasion and decide for yourself if the last 20 years have really led to much progress. When I get into a new car and feel the numb steering, all the electronics making decisions for me, and the excess weight that drags the car down I long for my 930. You and I are lucky to own these cars, most people only admire them from a distance or write them off as being too much trouble to own.
Next time someone gives you a compliment on your car offer to give them a ride, the look in their eyes as the turbo spools up should remind you that your are driving something special.

Awesome ride Rob!! And yes, it's possible to get "Porsche'd out".
Four years ago I "suffered" the same symptoms you are suffering now - I was "Porsche'd out". I owed both an '89 930 3.4l Ruf BTR kitted car and a '97 993tt - at the same time. I owned Porsche air-cooled history. But I decided to sell.
In less than a year I regretted selling so I bought a Subaru WRX STi thinking that would cure my turbo needs. NOT!! I sold that thing less than 6 months after buying it.
The itch to own a P-car never left me. This past April I purchased my fourth P-car (third turbo). I would rather have my old '89 930 back (I know it's in good hands now) or the '97 993tt (couldn't find that one) and wished that I would have put a cover on it and let it sit (taking it out every once in awhile "just for a drive") rather than sell it. My current ride is nice but my other two turbos were nicer.
If you really like your car, DON'T sell. If you DO sell and the urge to own / drive a turbo returns, you may not be able to find anything better than what you have now - so why risk having to pay big bucks (yen) in the future for something you already have now??
Just don't drive it for awhile - especially within the Tokyo city limits. Spend time finding new open road to explore where you and the car can enjoy the time together. The urge to drive it will return - it did for me.
Just my two cents worth, because that's all it's worth.

Very nice PCAR...
I'm a new kid on the block and have only had the priviledge of owning my lil baby for a little over a year and a half.
I can't imagine ever being without it...There is absolutely nothing else like it. I agree with Wiltel...
All of my friends drive the newer 996's and 997's and I still wouldn't trade or sell mine for any of the newer PCARS...
I love the simplicity of the design and the driving experience is something that you just can't get in any other car...especially one that's 30+ years old...
Just my .02 cents...

I suggest parking it for a couple of months (or weeks...), and driving the biggest beater you can get your hands on. You'll appreciate it that much more when you do drive it.
That being said, the itch for change can be hard to resist - the grass is always greener. I wish that I had kept the cars I owned 7 years ago, and banked the $$ I pissed away on misc. cars since then!

Yea you already have the best, either go 3.6 turbo or 3.8RSR.
You are lucky you live in Japan, can't find this in the state. ;-)

Thanks for your recommendations and input. I put the original drivers seat back in, now I feel the surge when its boosting. I put back in the A/C, so now I can drive with the windows up and not be bombarded with the popping, snapping and barking from the "muffler". Finally I greased up the front suspension and steering to eliminate some annoying creaks and lighten the steering. The car has began to show a more civilized side. I test drove a RUF BTR (asking price about $70,000). Nice car but I dont think its worth more than double my car. So I think I will put some money into it, starting with upgrading the brakes, then intercooler, then cams when the engine it out next. Funny I am getting more and more offers for it. But I know I will regret selling as I regret selling my 88-951. The old loving feeling is definately back.

Don't Sell It!
I was also Porsche'd out and sold my 85 930 and my 94 3.6 Turbo. I was sick and tired of the maintenance and lack of good accessible shops to do the maintenance. I had been ripped off by a few shops and pissed off by others.
In hindsight, I should have parked the cars in storage for a while and cooled my temper. Now I REALLY regret selling them. No other car satisfies the addiction quite like a 911 Turbo.
If you sell you will end up like me a few months later, desperately searching for another Porsche to fill the need for speed.
