Default First Driving impression of 76 930 and wheel question

It looks as though i will be pulling the trigger on an unmolested and reasonably maintained 76 turbo. The price is fair and i like the color. I took it out today for about 50 miles of driving. The steering felt tight, responsive and communicative, however, i felt the 15 inch wheels and higher profile tires left a lot to be desired. The engine was smooth and docile down under about 4K and came to life after about 4.5k rpms. There was slight hesitation at WOT but after loading it up with some 94 sunoco fuel it felt much better.

I think in a way it was quieter than my 996tt?!

I drove a friends 79 targa the week prior and it felt comparably sluggish and dare i say boring. I was almost prepared to pass on the 930.

Now the brakes.....yikes, no brakes......i was standing on them on several occasions and would feel much more comfortable with some top notch brakes.

I really wont have much funds to throw at this 76 right away but will invest in a good brake upgrade and some wheels.

My basic question is......... would a 78 brake upgrade be desirable, or could i fit in one the newer brembo kits (GTP-l) under some 16 inch fuchs.

Question 2 is should i just buy some less expensive Euromeister wheels 7 and 9 by 16s or just save up for some 17 inch lindseys. I have been browsing the forums for weeks and have noticed the commonly sought after lindseys are 9 inch fronts and 11 inch rears. Does this keep the car slightly understeering or neutral. I am not experienced enough with DEs to have an oversteering 930.

I want to keep the look authentic, however, this will never be a concours condition vehicle. Oh yeah, i forgot to mention, as far as power upgrades i dont plan on much more than something comparable to imagine autos stage I kit.

I would not buy a 76 and modify in anyway unless it has already been molested. These are fairly rare cars and sooner rather than later the market is going to realize that, it's already happening. If you want the bigger brakes I would buy a 78-89 930 that already has them. You can upgrade the wheels my experience is the really large tires on the front makes car track every impression in the road, you end up wrestling car not driving it. Let us know what you are really after car wise there may be better ways to go about it.

If you go too narrow up front, the car will understeer like a pig. It's a tough balance. My car is fine with 255 fronts.

I explained in your other recent thread what brakes go with 16 inch fuchs and don't add weight to your car.

As far as wheels, I would get 16 inch 7 or 8 and 9 fuchs. I would probably skip the Euromeister and get the real thing. With the 225 front and 245 rear, your car will be light on its feet and handle just right. The tire's overall height and weight will be low compared to any 17 inch tires, which will mean better acceleration. You also won't have any troubles wrestling the steering like you might with 17 inch.

But if you go 17 inch, you don't need these huge heavy 255s and 315s. The recommended tire size by people like Dave at TRE and Steve at Rennsportsystems is a 235 or 245 low profile front and a 275 low profile rear. Saves you weight and money and is a good balanced package. And you can save more weight by running a 10 inch rear wheel or 10.5, although you can run 275s on 11 inch rears, I believe.

If you simply want overkill, than get the 315s. And re-weld your rear sway bar mounts so they don't get ripped out of the chassis by all your tire grip which the car wasn't designed for.

Default I am same boat with my 77 930.............

I want to keep it as original as possible, but I plan on upgrading brakes, turbo and exhaust and keep all the original parts that I remove and restore so to put back to all original when the time comes. So I see nothing wrong with doing sensible upgrades that are just bolt on and don't modify anything to the point that it can't go back to original. The only piece I am missing is the original headlight buckets, which were missing from car when purchased, I actually like the look of the old bezels, but wish I could figure out how to put modern H4 flush headlights inside them.

thanks for the replies, i should clarify, i definitely do not want to bastardize the car, however, some tasteful and safe upgrades would make me feel better. I would like to 1 to 3 track events per year but of course i would only be running it 7-8/10.
Based on this plan, what do you guys think about oem 16 x 7 and x9 fuchs, a brake upgrade as previously suggested by DDD(thanks again), maybe some H4 lights and if i need a turbo go K27. I would keep everything if i ever need to get back to original.

So i guess i am in the market for oem fuchs.
BTW, great board good answers and very mature and knowledgeable.

Default My Fuchs

I have these fuchs for sale as I just added a different wheel and tire package to my car. Don't want to hi-jack the post, but figured these may come in handy.

The price is $1,700 and they are 16x 7/9 Chromed fuchs (beautiful job, 9.5 out of 10) and the tires have 90% front anf 75% rear left. Let me know what you think or if your interested.

Rear 245/45 ZR16 Dunlop SP Sport 8000
Front 205/55 ZR16 Dunlop SP Sport 8000

Thanks,
Bryan

PS. The last photo was them on my car.

Snap those babies up! That is your set of wheels IMO.

When the time comes, switch to 225/50s on the front. Same size rear.

Also, the Boxster brakes ARE Brembos. They just happen to fit under a 16inch fuch. Although you may want to double check that they fit under a front 7" fuch. Steve at Rennsport or Dave at TRE should be able to tell you that. Some of the later 7" inch fuchs that come off of 944s have slightly different charactersitics, I am told. I am not sure.

I will promise that those shiny fuchs are priced to sell if they are genuine (no reason to believe they aren't).
