Boxed Rockers
#3
Obviously I want to know because my '79 has them. Since I purchased the car used I have no way of knowing if they are factory. I have held the belief that they did not become a factory option until the birth of the 930S in Europe in 1981 and have therefore always felt that on my car they are add-ons. However, I have been told that indeed they first appeared on the 935 in 1977 and therefore were available as early as 1978 as an option. I am hoping to find someone who knows the answer and therefore be able to determine if there is any posibility that they are indeed original to the car.

This may help, but ......lots of nice conversions out there from companies that did it right. AJ Racing in California comes to mind. They used factory parts. Look at the mounting tabs on the body to see how the boxed rocker is secured to the body. Also look for the modified jack points on the car. The factory welded on extensions to the jack point and then added a reinforcement tube welded to the extension at a 45 degree angle for added strength.

Well I do believe that this might settle the matter in my case as there are no extensions to the jack points on my car and the brackets really do not look "factory" to me. I am now satisfied that I was correct that they are add-ons on my car. However, they still look real good?

Yes, they can still look good as long as they're put on there professionally. I have seen a few add-ons where there were spaces between the body and the boxes. Also, if you plan to keep them, be careful how you jack up the car because you can bend the supports for the rocker boxes .
