Default Anyone with a 993tt engine in a 930??

Well i thought "what the hell" and i've gone and bought a 1996, 45,000 mile 993tt engine for my 930, as some of you know i've recently blown my 930 engine up, and the thought of the rebuild and EFI and etc etc etc just had me lying awake at night!
I think the engine is standard and i'm aware that the 96 model has a difficult ECU for upgrading but i don't think it's "untunable", i was just putting the feelers out and seeing how many of you chaps had gone down this route, also if there are any little tips or suggestions you can give (a frontal lobotomy is an option). The engine will be with me by the end of the week and hopefully in the car soon(ish).

God help me!

JBL930 - A year or so ago, I had a higly modified 993tt engine installed in a 79 930 (replacing a 3.3). The car had undergone 935 body mods by Kremer in 1979 so of course had the 935 tale and larger engine compartment. The installation was performed by TurboKraft in Tempe,Arizona. They did a great job (using what I suspect was a shoehorn to get the thing to fit). The pics of this car (including a few of the engine compartment) are on page 5 of an earlier Rennlist posting in this forum entitled "official 930-935 RSR Project" last updated on 12/27/07. I can't speak for Chris at TurboKraft, but he's a good guy and might be willing to discuss what it takes to make the swap. Don't have his phone number with me but if you Google them you will pick up their website. Good luck.

Why did you ever sell it? It looks great, same interior colour to mine, I love the seats, were they a custom job or are they available from somewhere. Also, just in case the engine simply won't fit with my standard tail, do you know where to get hold of one of those 935 tails. It doesn't look too crammed in there at all

Tell us more please, how was the install, have you had any problems. Pictures would be great, especially under the lid

Pretty easy install in the 964. Makes for a nice sleeper. The 930 requires a bit more work

I've still got ithe car. The seats were custom, part of an entire interior refurbishment.

92742, sorry it sounded like you were talking about the car in past tense, lovely car BTW, i'll e-mail Chris and ask if he has any advice, every bit is welcome at the moment

Nathan, yes everything is coming with the engine, i think the term they used was a "key turn engine" which means everything is there to make it run. Stephen has hinted at it being a lot of messing around to get it to fit but the bottom line is that it will go in, i might have to lose the tail though which would be a shame, i'd love to keep it looking stock, otherwise i'd have sold the thing and gone for a 993 or 996, i really hope it all goes well. If anyone has any good advice i'd love to hear it, cheers

Yes, bolts in the 964...but I also used a 993 6-speed LSD gearbox. Only physical drama is making a rear deck lid that seals the i/c...otherwise it doesn't work very well, gets heat soaked and that's that. I/C works by engine fan pulling air through it.

I respectfully disagree with so many people that say an intercooler will not work without shrouding. When I first put my IC on my 76 over 20 years ago it had a kit that bolted to the inside of the rear deck lid. The IC had a rubber lip that with the lid closed would meet the fiberglass shroud above it. It all made sense. I thought it has to pull the air through the IC to cool etc. Over the years the rubber lip deteriorated, and finally I ditched it as well as the shroud above it. But, and I do say but, after many hard runs I'd pop the deck and feel the IC. It never got hot unless it was very hot outside and I don't usually go for runs on hot days. Years later after reading so much on the internet about needing a shroud I actually mounted a portable thermometer on the IC. I rebuilt the shroud put a new rubber lip etc. And what did I find. Not one bit of difference between having a shroud and running without it. I do have a Turbo S tail which might make some difference over the way the air flows into the engine. I do know it plants the rear far better than the rubber lipped 78-up tail did.

On hard runs I never make it a habit to stop the car, let heat sink take effect etc. The bottom line unless someone can show me irefutable evidence otherwise I don't think shrouding make much difference.

Hi Stephen, it would be great if you could give me a list of what obstacles i am going to have to get over, you mentioned in a PM that you've done lots of these installs on 930's so your advice would be very helpful

LA964RS, have you any pics of what you did with your tail, would be nice to hear about your conversion

You willhave to move to a TT tail and extendc it or use somethign like a GT2 tail. The intercooler sits much farther out and the pipes on either side are pretty wide. You have to pass all of them. The only way you can even make the GT2 tail work is to cut the undersides out.
