GT2 /XXX Motor in 930? If you could do it over, what would it be?
One for the archives, what different, more advanced turbo motors have been put successfully into a 930?
I did some looking around and found that a 2002 crate GT2 motor from Porsche can be had for $16k...I'm not looking for cheapness so to speak, but more to the point of keeping is more Porsche and having a "base" motor with way more ***** to start with before modding.
I heard many suggest an upgrade to a 3.6, heck I know of an almost new 3.6 with everything to put it in for $15k from a dismantler. The main thing is reliable performance, nothing outlandish like the 700-900bhp motors hanging around here. I'm not looking for huge dyno numbers (no offense to the beautiful uber-high bhp cars here), just tossing it out for discussion.
Pictures? Comments? Keep in mind i'm starting from scratch and need motor plus tranny - so if you could do it over again...blank sheet of paper on a car that's already bastardized with a non factory steel slantnose...what would you do?

I did the electronics (MoTeC) on a project where a GT2tt water cooled engine was installed in a 1973 chassis. With the stock engine, the car won overall in its first PCA race. There is a lot of capability from these engines.
For simplicity, the 3.6 turbo engine is a nice bolt in option. I believe Rick Deman has a low mileage one for sale.

Ah I forgot for a minute, watercooled and air cooled. Yup, still a newb.
I'm taking my time with this one as I'll most likely use this as an excuse to spend time with my father who is incredibly mechanically inclined - I'll be looking for a motor probably around the new year or spring to either build or just stick in.
Plus I figure its good to get the research in as I wind up on the GTR project.

Guns,
I think it is a great idea for your slantnose! You could mount the water radiators in the brake duct housings, put an oil cooler in the right place......the front valence. Of course the big thing is money. You could be spending up to twice the amount of the GT2 crate motor for transmission and fabrication work to be done on the chassis and electrics.
Of course there is the issue of adding all that unwanted weight of a water pumper!

Yes the water versus air cooled is something I totally over looked - easy for a 951 guy to do
I'm looking for mostly plug and play with a bit of fabrication in the process. Most of all I'm all ears for what works the best and is most reliable and fixable should I need parts if something breaks. I want the look and sound of the old cars with modern reliability..3
The budget for the motor aspect of this project is about $55k to include tranny.

I guess I could keep it "within" $55K.
I would start with a 993 TT engine. Second choice; NA 993 engine. Spec out the 993 NA engine for turbocharging purposes, apply your own EFI with a single turbo charger. I really think the 993 engines were the best of breed. They had a superior combustion chamber design, better ring sealing features. Only weakness....they had problems with some of the cranks. So, have it checked out thoroughly.
I would go with a modded 930 transmission with the added 5th gear. You don't need six speeds with all that torque available and it saves in fabrication costs.

The 3.6T motor Geoffrey mentions with a G50/50 attached with some relatively minor mods will give you 400 reliable HP easily. Put $15-20K into suspension, brakes, and safety equipment and you will have quite a car. You could even put stock 930 fenders and lights on it!

I think the new TT motor in a older 930 is the way to go. So simple to make stupid HP compared to anything aircooled and if done right will deliver great HP and daily reliability.

If your dad can help you out with the work and fitment, go watercooled and 996 GT2 gearbox, all the way, if you are starting from scratch. Unless you are a purist like me and want to keep everything stock
At the end of your project it will end up costing you less than rebulding a 3.6 engine and gearbox from scratch with internals and EFI etc..and the maintenance costs over a few years. Remember you can sell your aircooled engine and gearbox.

Thanks guys, the car is already bastardized with a slant conversion so instead of trying to make it a heart warming Excellence article - I just want to see what we can do with it that would be a fun project. Looks like the GT2 is the way to go.
Doc, when we get to the project - I'll let you handle the mods for the GT2 motor.
