I have found that just blipping the throttle a tad and THEN engaging the clutch and shifting into first works fine. Like a mini double clutch move, which by the way is the the best way I've found to smooth out my shifting all the time.

I had an 87 Carrera with the G50 and didn't have any 1st gear issues, but it still was a notchy long throw shift compared to more modern Porsches. I would think the 89 would be the best choice not only because of the G50 but because it's the last of the series.

The double clutch works good. I tried it a few times when it wouldn't go into first and the second try it did. Thanks.

Now, I just need to sort out the stalling problem.

not being able to get back into first gear is almost always a bad shift rod coupling...that is if you believe the gearbox is basically OK. After 165,000 miles on a '88 930..that's my experience! coupling is 91142402404 and the shift coupling screw (use a new one!) is 90142422900. Takes about 30 minutes to install....have a good..experienced Porsche mechanic do it so it's centered etc. Don't be talked into a adjustment...only lasts a short time. And Swepco 201 is a must, must, must!
