Default Emissions Testing

I'm looking at purchasing a 84 930 w/o a catalytic converter, but my state requires tail pipe testing for 2 more years.

Can anyone tell me the chance of passing emissions testing w/o a catalytic converter on a 84 930?

If I have to buy one used to pass, how much should I expect to pay?

Thanks,

Hugh

I am not sure about Texas, but here in ME we have a repair waiver for emmissions testing. I would look and see if your state has something like that also. Not sure about a used cat; sorry...

California has emissions testing every two years. I bought my 87 930 and it didin't have a cat converter and flunked....the PO told me it had just passed....NOT!.

I ended up finding a really nice set of nearly new cat converter and muffler on eBay that I paid $500 for. I'm just keeping it for the time when the emissions test would again be required, then put it on for the test. If you keep watching eBay, the mufflers and cat converters come up every so often. You might also ask folks near you if they have one you could use for the test. That's what I did until I could buy my own. Some of the good Porsche indy shops keep them around just for those sorts of requirements.

Drew and Chuck thanks for your help.

Did euro 930's add the catalytic converter and air pump as part of the federalization process? The seller thinks that maybe catalytic converters were not required on these cars?

Thanks,

Hugh

Hugh,
Here in Georgia I have found that if you run the car on boost just before you plug in the tail pipe probe it will pass every time. I heard about this trick from someone else and it worked for me. You want that sucker to be glowing when you pull in. Not much can survive that inferno.

You can probably buy or borrow a cat for the test since they're pretty easy to change on the 930. Unfortunately I don't have one or I'd offer. BTW, the law is 24 years, so you should only have to do it once. It might pass anyway, my 78 280Z passed without a cat a few years ago.

I have a K-27, B & B headers, GHL dual out exhaust, B & B intercoler, no air pump.......

I passed very easily in washington. had to have the local tech lean me out, passed, then richened it up when i returned. Took me/him all of 30 minutes round trip and $75. It can be done without changing the world.

Hugh - Yes, the federalized cars did have cats to meet DOT cert. Yes, you will need to have cats to pass inspection OR lean it out (couldn't bring myself to do that) OR find someone to "help" you out. What part of town do you live in? - Also, state of Texas is 25 years or older for "classic" car status which only requires safety inspection not emmissions.

Hugh, I have a factory cat and exhaust system you could borrow if you are willing to it get from Dallas.

My 86 passed easily with it.

Edited to add that I have no smog pump or air injection and leaned out the fuel head temporarily.

My 87 930 passed the sniffer test easily in Georgia. The engine was totally stock with over 100K miles except for the addition of a K27 turbo (which would not effect emissions anyway). When fixing some oil leaks after this emission test, I discoverd that the smog pump belt was 'toothless' , and appeard to have been that way for some time. So, my high mileage (for a turbo) engine was able to meet the EPA levels without a CAT or operational smog pump. Luckily for me, the clown administering ther test was not smart enough to notice that the car had no CAT, as that is an automatic failure here, irrespective of the sniffer data.

+1 on the trick to pass in Houston. I have an 84 930 and we passed emissions by leaning it out, testing it and then resetting it after the test. Warm it up a bit before you go in and you should get an almost perfect test.

Thanks to everyone for sharing all of your "real world" experiences on emission testing. I'll post a picture of the car when we close the deal.

Thanks again!

Hugh
