Default 964/993 rear bumper

I was thinking that while my car is being painted and I have acess to a 964 or 993 rear bumper, I might buy it and have it painted at the same time. My question is what is involved in fitting one of these later bumpers to a 930. Is one an easier fit than the other? Can someone who has done the swap please chime in? How does the side quarter panels fit the new bumper or do they get left off? How does the bumper mount to the rear of the car?

I've got a 964T fiberglass replica bumper on my car. It uses about 10 screws along the upper edge and attaches to the steel supports at fender openings. I don't now how different an OEM bumper is, but this one's pretty easy to install.

Should fit okay if your 930 is an 89, not sure about 87's. If it is a NA 964 bumper, you'll have to cut an exhaust opening in the driver side if you have a dual 930 exhaust.

Thank you both for a quick reponse. Shifter what do you mean ten screws on the upper edge? Where do the screws go and how do you get to them. Also, what year is your car? Don was not sure about my '87.

The car's a 79. The bumper was on the car when I bought it, so I don't know how this bumper install campares to stock. There are slip on sheet metal nuts on the body right under the tail lights, reflector, and along the quarter panels. The brackets that the bumper shocks mount on stick out beyond the body. I set the bumper on these brackets, lay under the car, and insert the screws through the bumper into the sheetmetal nuts.

Here's my car without the bumper. The sheet metal nuts are all along the bottom of the car.

David,
I'm sorry for being so dumb but I don't know exactly where you mean the screws are. Are they just below the strip where the reflector goes? If so, how do you get to them to put the csrews in? It doesn't look like much room around the muf. Also, do the rear fender panel screw holes match with the sides of the bumper?

I'm not hijackign this thread... but 125shifter is that fiberglass bumper quite a bit lighter than the original (I would presume it is.. but how much).

Also, that looks like a loud setup you got there?

A 993tt bumper will not fit a 930.
A fiberglass bumper is MUCH lighter than stock.
The FG bumper bolts (or screws) to the fenders of the car. Find a good mounting point and drill a hole. My bumper is held on exclusively by those bolts and the factory fender extension arms on each corner. There are no shocks and no shock mounts.

I just went online to GAD and they have a ton of 964 bumpers. They also have some turbo (964) bumpers. Which one would I need to fit or is there any difference between them?

This is stock bumper supports for reference from my '89 car, two 13mm bolts per side, that thread onto the stock studs which is part of the bumper strut:

Who exactly is GAD - is that German Auto Dismantlers?

I would easily say the rear stock bumper is a solid 30+ lbs, as it has a heat shield built in to protect the paint from the heat coming off the turbo plus the rear bumper is solid steel.

I am also interested in lighter alternatives...David's rear looks tasty...I mean his bumper you sickos!

A stock 964 turbo bumper would probably be a PITA to install since it's made of 3 separate pieces and bunches of little hardware. Here's a pic of my aftermarket bumper upside down. The red marks show generally where the screws would go.

I don't know how much lighter the fiberglass bumper is, but it must be substantial. Of course I have no crash protection from behind. I plan to fabricate a bumper from steel tubing to go under the fiberglass one to provide a little more protection.

As for the noise, it's pretty loud. I may have to rethink my exhaust.

Can you remove or install the bumper with the muf and turbo in place?
