Why did 911 Turbo's through '88 only have 4-speed gearbox...?

Not knowing the specifics of description of upgrades !2 K is not insane. I did a similar upgrade a few years ago on G50/52 of synchros, selectors and ratios and in combination with LSD actually equals by the time you add in original donor gearbox it adds up to a lot more than 12 K. I have also rebuilt numerous 5 and 6 speeds and it gets a little tedious explaining that these things do cost real dollars.
None of this is meant to critisize or draw conclusions re any posts in this thread.
Current price of G 50/52 is in the eyes of the purchaser-- they have become very hard to get as many "kit" cars use them with V8 torque and are one of the few gearboxes that will handle HP.
P.S- I do have G50/52 -stock-- for sale if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the info guys- Jean- that was an impressive list...
As for short vs tall gears, etc- short gears transfer more TQ to the ground than taller gears- it's a question of leverage- shorter gears = faster acceleration time, so if you can throw a 6th gear into the equation, up from a 5-sp, you can bring all 5 gears slightly closer together & still have a 6th gear, slightly taller than the 5th gear used to be- kind of having your cake & eating it too... The thing is, somewhere in there, you will have short enough gears that you'll spend too much time shifting & wil be counter-productive. THEN you have to take into account, turbos, as Jean is saying. Most turbos take a short bit of time to reach full boost & once they're there, they like load to keep generating TQ- therefore, turbos will usually get by w/slightly taller gears than many NA's... There's always a line somewhere in there, but I've argued this on the 951 board a few times- most people want to get a 3.89FD from a 3.38- this makes 5th gear redline ~145mph instead of stock 167, so shorter overall gearing- the 951S tested in C&D in 1988 had the 3.98 & it ran the 1/4 mile in 13.9 vs all the other turbo S's running 14.2 w/the 3.38- it WAS faster w/shorter gears. The 0-60 time was not faster though b/c of an early shift into 3rd- it was identical at 5.5. Then the 0-120 was not helped either w/shorter 3.89. Some people have gone to the 3.89 & claim it's like adding ~50HP/TQ to the 951. This may be true, but when comparing modded 951's, say, in the 350-400RWHP/TQ range, I'd take the taller gearing ANY DAY! At that point, you'd be whipping through the gears before you'd be reaching peak boost, etc & would therefore be counter productive... there's always a line....
thanks again for all the info... I LOVE ALL watercooled 911's & hope to get into one some day- a turbo of course... Would like to know more about reliable mods & such, but that's a huge can of worms to open right now...
Thanks

Thanks guys.
But I think the G50/50 has a shorter bell housing that will fit into a 930 without much mods.. what about the G50/5X? Is the Ruf 5 speed gearbox a modified G50? I feel that the best thing about the G50 is that it makes the 930 feel like a much newer car. The 4 speed really makes it feel like a truck! No feedback at all. Is there any way at all to improve the feel, downshifting from 3rd to second is really difficult, especially when you are driving fast!

This is probably too technical for me...
Maybe these pictures help out if a 930 is anything close to a 1974S body..
These were taken from my 1974S (with TT conversion) which has a G50 fitted in it. My G50 gearbox was moved backwards to make it fit, it fits perfectly however.
The shifter travel was ridiculous on the G50 so I decided to fit a short shifter from Mark Hargett. You can see on the pictures how it fits. . The shifter needed some minimal modifications at the linkage level, but it did wonders to the car. Subsequently to these pics, they fabbed a center console for the tunnel that hides all the linkages and only keeps the upper part of the shifter visible.
They also fabbed a special and much more solid gearbox mount since the previous one was cracked, you can see the new one in the pics.
Obviously the blue seats are gone by now and replaced with Kirkeys
Apologies for the quality of the pics.

5th gear failed.
As you say, it took Porsche a long time to get over that one.
