Default Speedometers

Why do some Carrera Turbos come with a 180 MPH Speedo and some with a 180 MPH Speedo? I was curious as to why? Year? Performance?

In the US I believe, and I'm working w/o a net here, there was a period of time when a speedo was limited to the top speed it could display by federal law. After several years of this idiocy they reversed the ruling and the speedos were able to display higher speeds reflecting the car's true potential.

Does this have anything to do with the C4 Vettes having 85mph speedos.

The reason I ask is that I have a ROW car with a MPH Gauge that goes to 180 MPH. The dials were not refaced. They were converted to MPH from KM. My car was shipped over in 1990. My friends car is a US based model year of 1989. His Speedo is 160. I was curious the reason behind the speedometers differences.

Probably a combination of the conversion to mph and some insurance issue for the U.S. market vs. the ROW.

Sometimes people buy 200mph speedos and put them in (you see them for sale in Porsche Panorama and other mags). I'm almost certain no 930's came from the factory with a 200mph or eqivalent km (325KM) speedo- I assume you have a 930, i.e. 1989 or before.

I guess in theory one could have their speedo recalabrated and a new face plate put on, or buy a 200MPH speedometer and have the place set the miles the same before installation, but my guess is more than likely that car's total mileage is unknown.
