Default 930 Upgrades - Recommendations Please

Just purchased a 1998 911 (930) 3.3T after owning several 944na's and Turbos.

Its in great condition and runs well. Can anyone suggest some simple street upgrades, maybe headers, muffler, turbo, air filter, etc that would be relatively easy to do and would enhance the stock performance? I am on a budget, but if I am replacing parts, I would want to replace with the best aftermarket quality available.

I'm assuming you mean 1978 or 1988.
Headers: B&B
Exhaust: Fabspeed
Turbo: If it still has the OEM 3LDZ you'll need at least the basic K27 that the 965 came with. However, there are many variations of the K27 (S, HF, HFS, etc)...it all depends on how much you want to spend. Stephen Kaspar of Imagine Auto can get you all the goodies at good prices.

Many replace the waste-gate spring with a 1 BAR...I'd leave it stock.

If you're on a budget some have used the Schnell headers, however I don't think they have heater boxes...if that's importatnt to you.

I'd also keep the stock airbox and maybe use a K&N airfilter. The after market ones do clean up the engine compartment, but there's not much bang for the buck (JMHO). I've learned to remove the stock airbox pretty quickly if I need to service something.

Thanks, wow, quick repiles, you guys are much faster than the 944 lot!

So, K&N airfilter, B&B headers, leave the waste-gate spring alone, will check turbo and report back with type and shall pictures of my new toy.

Thanks again

Ditto with Sandman, although I’d go for a Garrett ball race turbo if you can stretch the budget, mine starts spooling as low as 1700rpm. You'll need to do something about fuel delivery like get the warm up regulator modified so it's adjustable to supply more fuel or get a fuel head mod from imagine, to make proper use of all the mods you'll need to get your heads ported and modify the injector blocks too, although the bills quickly start running out of control, what is your budget??
Oh, and welcome, I’m a newbie too, there are some serious experts on here who might correct what I’m saying, I’m not a mechanic I’m just familiar(ish) with what I’ve (had) done to mine, your in for some fun

From what I hear, headers will give you the biggest bang for the buck.

Welcome to the group!
Headers and Intercooler, but then you are approaching $3K fast! If you can find a 965 Intercooler and Blow-off Valve assembly, go for it. It is heads and shoulders above the earlier Intercoolers. You may save a few hundred there versus going to an aftermarket IC. After that, a more efficient and higher output turbocharger. Very easy to spend $5K in those three areas without going into the engine.

if you're not in a rush (but I know we all are when we want something), watch ebay or pelican for a b&b header set. you'll get them for half price of new. seen a few sets in the last year. there was a post around a few mo's ago on a comparison contract on lower cost headers

Thanks everyone,

I have set myself a budget of $10k and want to do what I can myself. From what I have seen I shall quickly eat at this budget with B&B headers, Fabspeed exhaust, K&N filter, 965 intercooler & blow-off valve and possibly a K27 turbocharger. I really do not want to do any engine work at this time. A few questions on the suggestions made:

1. Are all the parts I mentioned a bolt-on job or is there some fabrication work required?
2. Is there additional work/parts required to make everything work together?
3. Would I get a noticeable improvement in performance without carrying out any engine work?
4. What K27 turbo should i use to replace the stock turbo assuming the modifications above and no engine work?

I know my limitations as a mechanic so I don't want to take on too much. I also don't want to put everything together and have to get back on this post to resolve all the problems.

Thanks

The aforementioned upgrades are all bolt on and can be had for well under 10k even if purchased new.

As you say you are on a budget, I wouldn't touch anything with the airbox or with the filter, stock is fine.

Headers, K27HFS (better to spend a bit more here so it is done), the 965 type IC, 1bar spring and then a fabspeed muffler.

Stephen Kaspar will fix you up with the parts and any advice needed.

You will have to fabricate some basic brackets to mount your 965 IC, if everything else is bolt on then the only other thing is a bit of time on the dyno to tune it all in. It won't be long before your back on here asking what you can do for more power!! If you've got a bit of spare cash I would definitely have the Garrett ball race turbo, you might need help plumbing the oil feed etc but it's well worth it, it has pretty much eliminated lag in mine
