Default Tire size for high HP

What size (width) tires are you high HP guys using? I have 285's on 17" wheels and they can light up easily when boost kicks in 1st and just a bit in second.

Also, what size rims (diameter and width).

Thx

Don, my car is not a 965 but what I found is that tire brand and constitution are more important than width. I have much better grip on the street with my 295s Pirelli P Corsa than my Michelin Sport Cup 315s which make me loose traction in 5th gear. The Michelin need a LOT of time to warm up on the street, in my case, they never get to their optimum temps in fast street usage. In high torque cars this is more noticeable because you can break traction easily under WOT so you can tell which tire is better for you. The (almost new) 315 MPSC throw me at 0.4G sideways in 4th under WOT, while the 295 Corsa keep me going straight at least.

I am using 10X18 265s and 12X18 with 315s in the rear Michelin or 235X295 Corsas.
I have not tried non "R" compound, they might be better.

I agree with Jean, the width is not the only factor. My 930 is running on 225 and 265, used to be wider. My rims are 9x18 and 10x18 (don´t remember the front offset but rear are et -15).

How wide tires fits the 930? I´m also intrested in what offset rims you are using?

The last 8 years approx. I have only bought Pirelli tyres, I think they are great. I have never driven on a track with them though. I have asked on these boards about tyres and most people say Pirelli is not the best. Maybe they are best for street. Oh and I haven't had any failures with Pirelli's.

Right now I am using the F1 GS D3 Goodyears with excellent results. I took them to Birmingham for some track time and they held up well for the dozen laps I ran them. I've never owned Pirelli's. The other tire I liked were S02's. The S03's don't some in the size I need. Thanks

Also agree with the above observations.
I ran Yoko AVS 345/35-15s on 15x12s and could light them up in second all day long and 3rd if road conditions were not so good. Switched to Pirelli P-Zero Roso 315/30-18s on 18x11s and found a lot more control in second with no slipping in 3rd.
Tire height is also a factor. The 18s are an inch taller than the 15's which changed the functional gear ratio.
Don, I hope we cross paths at some point. Your car looks a lot like mine.

It's about that time to head to the N GA mountains - there are a couple of us who frequent the roads up there. Lets keep in touch for the rides....

315x30-18 Michelin sport cups. Spin in second on full boost but hookup but will not hook up in first. The only tires that will hold are drag radials but I do DE events. 733rwhp.

You shouldn't get traction in ANY gear!

A buddy and I were planning a trip to the Dragon soon but my car's still down with a sick tranny. Where do you go in Georgia?

I drive route 19, 180 and 60 near Suches and south of Blairsville. Its about a 30 mile triangle with sweepers (rt 19), tight 1st gear turns (rt 180), and 2nd gear curves (rt 60). Its better than the dragon and much closer.

When I lived in Cumming many years ago, we use to make quick runs up and down Blood Mountain. Always had a blast passing each other when we could.

I know all of you guys have been discussing the "name brands" but I run Kuhmo Ectsas on the advice of my mechanic who has forgotten more about air cooled Porsches than I ever knew and so far they've been excellant street tires. He's runs Kuhmos in all kinds of SCCA (ITS and GT class) and Porsche Club events. I run Spec Racer Ford class in SCCA and so I have to run our spec tires. Great grip wet or dry, and so far (Approx 5k miles) good wear too. They need to be kept inflated right (36 front/42 rear) but so far I've been very happy.

I run the Kuhmo R compound on the track - great tire for the price.
