Default 83' 930 or 03' 996 C2

Looking at spending less than 45k on a used 911. I am torn right now between a 2 owner 83' Euro-Spec 930 v.s. a 1 owner 03' 996 c2 coupe.

The 930 has all receipts and is a 9 out of 10 in all ways. It has just 2k on a full motor rebuild including turbo and tranny with a new clutch, brake pads and rotors. Motor was rebuilt by Motor Meister with raceware studs, stainless steel valves, cams, and header. Car is anthracite on black and has new tires on stock sized 16" Fuchs. Asking 31k

or

A bone stock 2003 Carrera coupe with 33k miles, 6spd, blue on black with aero kit. Asking 44k.

I know the 03' is 20 years newer and more reliable but I have always loved the 930. Car won't be my year round daily driver but I may drive it into work a few times a week on nice days and it will see a few auto-x or track events a year. Please convince me one way or the other!

You answered your own question, do a search on Motor Meister here on Rennlist and on Pelican Parts, then see the local Better Business Bureau. Then either find a very nice 89 US Turbo with the g50/50 5 speed or look for a 996 if that’s your choice. Don’t make a move on a Motor Meister car without doing that search first and reading all about their work and troubles.

I had Motor Sheister build my motor and this happened:

For less than $40K you can get yourself a beauty US '89 930 as Trader stated!

There are tons of 930s on eBay\ Autotrader.....check them before deciding.

You can edit the post, it is in the bottom right of your message, a little button. It's the pen and paper button.

Oh and I read the motor meister part twice, just to make sure I wasn't having a nightmare...

Two completely different animals. The 930 is not a 996 that just looks better. There are big plusses and minuses to both. It depends on what YOU want this car to do and how you fantasize about it feeling when you drive it and own it. I say fantasize because the reality is often much different than the fantasy of owning a particular specialty car like a 930 -- some good, some not so good. It depends on you.

Alot of people (not owners or enthusiasts) describe the early 911's as having scary handling. If you like this then go for the 930. If you are scared go for the 996.

I'm surprised that with the reputation that MM has everywhere, that they are a sponsor here and can still advertise in Panos. Kinda like Windward and one other place, but the name escapes me. Windward was banned from Panos, Excellence, etc.

No one has to take my word for it, they can do the search themselves, and dont forget to call the BBB. Over on Pelican there is a thread several pages long from someone trying to list all the horror stories.

jpalmerm -- just my $0.02, and the MM stuff aside, I would go with the '03 coupe. I owned an 89 C4 before my current race car and the shifting, abs and few other things made the later car much, much easier to drive.

In the UK nobody gets banned from magazines, even the PCGB magazine has IMO unsavoury advertising in them. And of course none of the mags would name and shame any company. Thank goodness for the web and 'talking' to people who have dealt with different companies.

Much easier to drive does not always equate to fun. I prefer my 930 over my father's previous 996TT. The newer cars are too refined. Much better for a daily driver, but for a weekend toy, I like the more raw cars.

Forget the 996 if you don't want to take a bath in depreciation. Get a 930 (not the one you described!) or a 993.
