Congrats David, I feel like I have been on the same journey albeit the Cliff notes version.

I'm having more trouble with the Motec M600 ECU. I think it's time for a new box, hopefully Motec agrees. Sam Shalala from Protechnik came by my house to help do some fine tuning and as he was saving to a new file the program crashed. The ECU file name would change but when we tried communicate with the laptop it would keep crashing. It did the same thing with 2 different computers.

On a side note, I'm using a Bosch 6 pin TPS part# 0 280 120 400 000. I believe pin 1 is 5V, pin 2 is 0V, and pin 3 is the signal. Can anyone confirm this? On the ECU I'm getting around 20 with the throttle closed and around 98 at full throttle which seems right, but Sam said if the 0V is wrong it can confuse the ECU.

I feel for ya. If you're ever feeling down about your conversion, call me and I'll tell you all about my mine. You'll feel better - fast.

Actually I don't feel down at all. I attribute that to all the war stories I see here that have prepared me for disappointment, well that and the beer.

Does this mean you've been having more problems, Don?

Burned pistons. It seems as if JE pistons are not all the good for high hp turbo cars. Their metalurgy for air cooled turbo's is not what it needs to be for high hp tuning. I found this by doing a leakdown back in Aug, so I pulled the engine too see why I had 75% leakdown on cyl 1, and 50% on cyl 2. The heads, cyl's and pistons have been at JE and Performance Developments for a couple of months for evaluation.

It seems as if the only options available to me are, pay big bucks for special pistons (like Omega's) or buy ANOTHER set of JE's and de-tune the engine to be no more than 12.0:1 AFR.

For your info, the pistons are burned between the top ring groove and the piston dome at the intake valve - no where else. Looking down on the pistons, they look perfectly normal.

The car was running fine with no noticable reduction in power. It was however, using a lot of oil (1 qt per 250 miles) - that's why I did a leakdown.

We figured out the problem with the ECU (or lack of a problem). My laptop had a virus or some other malidy that affected communication through the CAN cable. I reformated the laptop and it works fine now.

Last night I worked on getting the ECU tuned good enough to drive it, but I can't get the lambda sensor to work. It worked last week but it no worky now. I've tried another sensor and tried the other lambda connection on the ECU to no avail. Next thing I'll do is trace out the harness and make sure there's not a problem there.

When it's running it sounds like it's missing. I've check all the spark plug wires and they're firing and firing in the correct order. Last night I cut fuel to each cylinder to look for a problem. I found that when I cut fuel to 1, 3, & 5 the car would try to die which tells me they're working fine. When I cut fuel to 2, 4, & 6 the stumble would change but the engine wouldn't try to die. 1 & 4, 2 & 5, 3 & 6 share coils so I don't think it's an ignition problem. 1, 2, & 3 and 4, 5, & 6 share 12V from the harness so I don't think it's a wiring problem. This one really has me stumped.

I've been out driving the car finally!!!

The lambda sensor's working, it was the wiring. Fortunately I was able to change the wires at the firewall bulkhead connector so it was no big deal.

It's stumbling bad off idle and trying to die. I've tried turning off the fuel accel enrichment but it didn't change. Should I have some ignition advance on accel?

Good job 125! Get a few miles on it, then tune it on the dyno and you'll be 1 happy camper!

125:
What fuel are you running?
What's your static compression ratio?
How much boost are you gonna run?

I'm running pump gas right now, but I'll have a 4 position map switch so I can change ECU maps for different fuels.

I measured the compression ratio at 7.7:1

I'm planning to run 1 bar, but I'll have a boost control **** on the dash and a hidden switch to limit boost to the spring. I think I put a 0.7 bar spring in the waste gate but it's been so long I've forgotten.

I figured out the off idle stumble. I had it running off the MAP signal for the base map rather than TPS.

I'm trying to stay off the boost while I break in the engine but I hit a little boost in 2nd gear and the back end stepped out on me. Yee Hah!!!!!!

Congrats on the build and drive David, it's been a long haul. That "step-out" is just a little taste of the fun just around the corner Not that we don't trust you, but we're also going to need some "out of the garage" pics.......

Lincoln, I sent you a PM.

I've been driving the car for a week. I've got the fuel injection and ignition running well enough to drive it. I think it's conservative enough not to blow it up but lean enough to seat the rings. After the Thanksgiving weekend I'll take it over to Sam at Protechnik to tune it.

Some problems are creeping up. I've got an oil leak that appears to be coming from the engine oil cooler. That's not that big a deal, but I also have one head to cylinder leak. Looks like it'll be coming apart again.
